I think most of the ARB bumper is made from 1/8”

I assume these are recommended if you go with an aftermarket bumper?

 

If you mount a winch, apparebtly. It’s a 1st gen thing i guess

 

It’s an all gen thing. If you don’t use your winch hard, the factory mounts are probably fine. I have seen several bent on 2nd gens

Check whatever bumper you get by holding it up and check to see how it will fit before welding anything

 

why are folks cutting 3+ inches off the frame? To make the bumper line up better, or to account for the new plate?

 

I got the ARB deluxe bull bar

 

On the 98-2000 the frame is 3 inches longer than the other models, because of the the bumper they used on them.

Hmm. That mount looks similar to whats on the 3rd gen 4runners. When I built the bumper for my buddy on his, we cut that off and welded on new mounts completely that used 2 bolts instead of 1 like that. Works really well for him and doesn't use a captured bolt so you can replace them if you want.

 

That would probably be the best route, but not easy to do with an off the shelf aftermarket bumper

That is how I did mine, some drill a hole and weld nut on the inside of the plate. If you weld a bolt like in the pic it gives you something to set the bumper on when installing it.
