DIY: Differential Breather Extension

Where are the automatic transmission breather and the transfer case breather? Cant find them anywhere!! Help

 

I'm not near my truck to take a picture but there are two breathers in the engine bay on the inside of the drivers side wheelwell ... i think... one should be the front dif the other should be the transmission. I could be wrong so if you don't fine them there wait for someone to correct me.

 

About to do this mod and yeah looks like just the rear is applicable for 1st gens, I didn't trace the front two from the engine bay but they are using the same caps as the rear diff. There is only two though, so wondering where the third is (as tranny, front diff and transfer case should have one each right?)

 

One would think that each has a breather but that is not necessarily the case. The transmission and T-case could share one or in my case, I have a auto so it may use the dipstick as a breather. I'm not sure how it is setup on our trucks. I extended the rear diff breather and called it good enough.

 

Older thread but the 5spd trany breather is on the front of the plate the shifter mounts to (shifter sub assembly). My breather was clogged and blew the seal in between that sub assembly and the trany. Looks pressed in so I see people just yanking the cap and clamping a hose and just following the route of the transfer case breather.

 

Finally did my diff breather. Just zip-tied the new breather valve on the inside of the fuel door opening. That way it’s straight up and down, and out of the way.
Anyone see any potential problems with this location?

That is probably what I will be doing too, I don't find it necessary to route it to the inside of the fuel door, kind of pointless IMO.

 

Only advantage I can see is if the gear oil seeped or not.

Don't know if that's a diagnostic for anything serious wrt pressure in the diff or not.

 

Dont mean to revive an old thread but has anyone ever actually had a problem with water or debris getting into their diff without this mod?

 

Nope, 9 years now for mine. You risk water getting in if you don't do this!

 

what parts did you use for this? There's an awful lot of different parts people are using for their diff breather but I think I like the parts you used the most.

Is is possible to just buy the union and hose and reuse the axle housing breather at the top of the hose?

 

I followed a diy breather setup from another site, for some reason they said that you couldn't vent the transmission. When I redid my clutch I noticed that the tranny and t case
both had their own stock vents that weren't visible unless they were unmounted. I pulled them out, tapped them for a hose barb and so far so good.

The breather on the differential is the problem, as it is NOT a true breather. We are putting a true breather at the end of a hose, up high, beyond where water could enter it.

 

Basically copied you. Totally out of the way and I reached around and was able to check that the breather cap still moves freely. It was a pain to get these breathers and union onto 1/4" fuel line though!

 

I followed this installation as well. I didn't have hose clamps small enough for this size hose; I figured without how tight the hose was on the breather that a zip tie would suffice. I took advantage of the situation and thoroughly cleaned the shite on the side of the gas door.

 

Has this been high enough for you so far? I ended up bringing mine to my snorkel but I think that's overkill

 

If you are in water as high as you gas tank filler, then your truck would be floating away. Water in the diff would be the least of your problems!!!
