So addressing the bolded text in your quote, I'm picturing it as the gear has more "life" in it, but the stock S mode will choose to downshift instead of using the current gear.

I guess I was assuming a downshift would be called for because the current gear is not suitable anymore.

I'm understanding it more, I just don't think its applicable to my use.

 

i got my box with the obd2 plug and usb cord yesterday. now just waiting on my registration info to come back.

question though- on the flash manager, where it has stock/1.05/1.05.1, mine also has 2.0 EROM. from what i understand, 2.0 is still a test file. is that just a holding spot for when it comes available? i tried to search but 2600 pages is terrible, and there are so many offshoots in this thread

 

Correct.

lets say you're in 3rd. and you floor it at 2500 rpm. You will downshift, no matter what.
But with gearlock, you floor it and have 200 ft lbs of torque at your disposal.

 

You are correct. My experience is why I said I haven't thought of an applicable use. I haven't really had any issues with downshifts except for going up hill in 6th and headwinds. And in those cases the downshift is required anyway. I suppose if I had anything to tow I would likely find another issue.

I personally just use S mode to cause downshifts when needed. I don't want to come out of a cloverleaf in 6th doing 35 and needing to merge or something that the truck would do stock in D. I'll put it in 4th or whatever I need. I don't want to be bothered with shifting the whole gear range myself.

 

The conversation between @OVTune and @cstern1 has helped me understand. I was under the same impression as cstern1 that if the truck downshifted it was because that gear was needed. I was concerned because I didn’t want the engine lugging. Thanks for the explanation. Still seems like a fine line and I’ll stick to my solution.

 

I'm glad I brought it up. It had been bothering me for a while. I'm used to an automatic downshifting because I asked for it and needed it so didn't make sense to block out the downshift.

Although until this truck, I never wanted to block out a high gear either....

 

@OVTune, I’ve noticed w/ gear lock and let’s say 5th gear in the freeway if I mash the throttle to the floor, nothing happens. With a manual transmission, if you floor it it will lug but also give it a little more “go”. Is this normal?

Got my reg set (ty Matt!) and just flashed the 2.0.0 91 stock exhaust tune with no problems. About to give her a spin in the mountains and see how it goes!

 

It’s going to depend what rpm you are at. Keep in mind 5th in the manual is not the same as 5th in the automatic. They are very different drivetrain ratios, the MT will run higher RPM than the auto in the same gear and speed.

 

For sure, I haven’t been using GL since it doesn’t do what I’d like it to do, but I believe after about 2500 rpm it won’t let me give any more throttle.

Just curious if that’s the norm or it should be reported.

 

I really preferred the tip in on 1.05 91 octane with ECT. I have tried 91 on 2.0 and dont feel the tip in is aggressive enough and I'm in the camp that prefers ECT to not gearlock.

Is it possible to flash back to 1.05?

 

And also, I get the gearing is different but when I floor it with GL engaged on the freeway literally nothing happens...

 

In case I am missing something (highly possible lol) you can certainly flash back, I mean you can flash back to stock why would it be different for 1.0.5?

Mat have you considered making a tune where for the sake of fuel efficiency the truck is in atkinson mode up to say 2500rpm and 40% throttle with a bit leaner AFR in low load situations. This will improve highway fuel efficiency right? I just spent driving 1700 miles over flats and mountains and got 23.4mpg while following a truck at 70mph for several hours with 14mpg going over mountain passes and averaged 20mpg over the whole trip. I bet with some of your magic a trip like this could become 25mpg average

 

So.. my handheld came in today. The box had the programmer a USB cable, the OBD cable and a generic info pamphlet. Is there instructions on ovtuned.com somewhere I am not seeing? I tried to get it to read my trucks ECU and it fails. Anyone manage to get theirs to work? The handheld program on the site does not see the device. If I missed something in the previous replies please point me in the right direction @OVTune
