Should I just take a Saw'zall to the exhaust?

I didn't notice a shell, but if you have one and you ever have a dog or any other living thing back there you don't want to dump your exhaust under the bed. You might want to get that driveshaft checked just to be on the safe side. If a joint or yoke cuts loose, you may damage other things and you'll be stuck. Also, it's one thing for the rear yoke to give, but if you drop the front you might have a pole-vaulting story for us all.

Just google drive shaft or drive line shop and see what you get. If not see who is doing axles or transmissions. They either do it or have a guy that does it.

No shell, and though one might be in the future the dog won't ever be back there. I built a platform for him by removing the rear seats.

I made a number of calls today to transmission shops and other various shops and nobody had any idea who did driveshafts. Finally found a guy about an hour from me and I'm going to see him Monday. No harm in knowledge. Depending on the severity of what/if he finds and price, I might continue to carry on. I can't see myself never doing this again, so I might wait for it to get worse after a few more trips if the procedure is expensive.

 

I heard some ppl weld gusset around the bold/nut to prevent them from being bent/ripped off.

 

Cut a piece of DOM tube (probably .120 wall) large enough to fit the socket for the nut into with some wiggle room and weld it all around. Cut it an an angle to help it not hang up, or, build a ramp out of .120 sheet that goes up to and around the tube to allow it to slide over a contact.

I don't know what this whole piece looks like and what the limitations might be, but generally, I wouldn't have built a slider with hardware hanging off the bottom. I would have (theoretically) welded in a tube that allowed the bolt/nut assembly to ride above the impact point. I say theoretically, because I can't see all of what's going on and there may not have been another way to do it for assembly/packaging/production/etc. reasons.

 

You make a good point. And I’m sure it can be done. But I trust Mobtown to know their stuff. It a better mousetrap exists I think they’d build it.

 

Update. Today I went to the shop to have the driveshaft checked. He lifted the truck and put it in gear and watched shaft from below. It’s definitely wobbling and he said right away the shaft is damaged. Compared to the front half of the rear shaft, the wobble is obvious. He said it’s gonna be about $400 if I take the shaft off myself and bring it to him. He said he’s going to do a thicker tube while he’s at it. Does that price sound right?

After driving the truck this week I do think I feel vibes. I can’t tell if it’s in my head or if it’s always been there since it happened. I will say I am pretty sure I feel vibes compared to when I first made my original post.

My only hesitation is that how do I know if the wobble isn’t caused by my rear lift? I didn’t install shims because I never felt vibes. But now I’m questioning that too. Although I’ve had the lift for a while now and don’t think there were vibes before last weekend. Could the two be related? I’m thinking no because even at very low speeds I could see the shaft wobbling and I think that if it was driveline vibes from the lift it would only be at higher speeds?

 

I ran into this same issue this past weekend at AOAA. The sliders have hardly any damage. The bolt is ground down to the nut. My cross member also has some damage. Is there any way to incorporate a skid for the cross member that would also protect that bolt? I'm sure the answer is your skids cover that area though.

 

This, only thing im worried about now is water crossings and stalling it. Hasnt happened and generally speaking i only go to tire submerged deep a handful amount of times a year

 

Should be no different that if it was stock. Go for it!!

I have a magnaflow welded in and it sounds less raspy after chopping the exhaust. It centralizes the sound which is nice and I get more of the intake as well.

Sawzall for 30 sec then lube the rubber hanger and yank that bish off
