What in sam hell is this noise? It sounds like metal on metal. fear something severe that might warrant an engine pull. For reference, 155,000 mile 1982 Toyota Pickup 22r (carb). Thank you.

I have no clue. I pretty much took this video and went straight here. I was thinking that I could that, but I thought that noise was dieseling.

You should pull the valve cover and take a look. Probably the original chain slapping around in there, chewing up the timing cover.

Is it running ok otherwise? Those engines aren’t known for their quiet operation. Also can’t really tell from the video what sound you’re trying to isolate. Another thing to check is for loose valves. They will cause a racket. .008 intake and .012 exhaust iirc.

Sounds like the truck is nearly 40 years old.

I just heard it today, and its my first car so I'm still learning. I get it that old trucks make weird noise, but I feel like I should be somewhat concerned when it sounds like metal to metal scraping sounds come from the engine.

Does it get really loud when you rev it up and then let off the gas?

not really loud, but it gets louder. Ive been thinking about it your probably right. But shouldn't it make a dieseling sound if that tensioner is bad?

    Completely understandable.

But at the same time.... your truck is 40 years old.

Sure .. someone can diagnose the problem.. and you’ll pay for that and the repair....

But maybe it’s time to get a new truck.

Not sure what you mean, but you’ll see the guides all chewed up when you pull the valve cover.

Is that the truck in your avatar?

Yeah thats my truck. I have more pics on a build thread in my signature. What I mean is that the truck will literally sound like a diesel. At least from what I've heard.

Get that cover off and check the valves. That would cause a diesel sort of sound if they’re loose.

Nice truck. Love that body style. And you don’t have to spend a fortune to build them to be quite capable.

Its gone through a total restoration and engine rebuild, but yeah I agree with you, its almost 40 years old. I know what I was getting into when picking this up. I knew I would need to fix it when it broke. All I ask is for guidance because I gotta learn somewhere.

Surprisingly, its pretty capable stock. Granted I don't do extreme rig-ruining stuff with it though.

Yes. The buyout price. Plus anything you’ve done to it now or had to fix
