Mice chewed wire harness... Again

I have you covered because I have been through this. Black pepper, chili powder, predator urine ( get this at sport stores) and even pepper spray. The nastier the better, but just be aware, you will get some scent in the cab.

Black pepper and chili powder are excellent on the ground, especially in confined spaces. Overwhelming to the senses.

Pepper spray is the best, but you will have to be very careful. Wear gloves, goggles and a mask... Spray it liberally on a towel and wipe it on exposed wiring. This stuff is nasty. You will have to be aware of it when working on your truck and you will have to warn anybody else who may be working on your vehicle. It lasts a very long time.

Predator urine is nice because you can make a perimeter around your truck with fewer fumes that actually make it into your truck. Again, the nastier the better.

I prefer predator urine, black pepper and chili powder.

Wow, you have put some effort into this. I will adopt your techniques. I have bobcat urine (and nasty lures cuz I trap). Funny, I did not think of its application here. Thanks.
Wait... the bobcat urine is stored in the garage and the garage already smells faintly of it. Perhaps a direct application to the cement. Floor, not taco...

Oh my. Brilliant. In Hawaii, some folks just floated popcorn on the water and had a ramp up to the lip of the bucket. Rats jumped down to get the popcorn.

 

Ive seen those too. There’s also some floating stuff you can get then just put bird food or whatever and they fall through when they step on it. Only problem with that is you can’t see what you’ve caught and it’s a mess to clean out.

I think I’ve got like $20 in this including the bucket and bait and it’s solved my mouse problem. The other nice thing is it is a multi catch trap, so it just keeps catching

 

No need for an exterminator, water trap or cats. This is simple and quite effective. Fashion a handlebar out of copper wire to the black wire. That completes the circuit a lot better. If you can afford to, instead of steel mesh, use a copper sheet for the floor. Make sure it’s not plugged into a GFI and you’re good to go. This actually works well.

 

So I had this happen to my Tacoma about a month ago and luckily they only chewed through one wire which I repaired. After that I cleaned it thoroughly but they keep coming back. I even tried the dryer sheets but they actually would just build nests on top of them. Not until I bought one of these devices do they go away. In fact they also went and made a pile of stuff on my other car and same thing. I cleaned it out and then installed this device and since then both of my cars have been mice free. Check it out.

I'm going to try a spray mixture with some Tabasco sauce mixed with clear Elmers glue and water.

Will spray the wiring under the hood and reapply after any washings.

I also use and keep some Pine Sol handy, bears don't like that smell.

 

I use a night light (one with a on/off light sensor) under the hood or just open the hood a few inches because the rodents want a dark warm place for a nest.

 

I don't have proof but a coat of one of the oil based rustproofing compounds seems to help deter rodents.

 

I want to see that in action!

 

For a home made trap: A bucket of water with a broom handle leaning over the bucket. Put a gob of peanut butter on the end of the handle, then grease the last 6" of the handle. The mice run up the broom handle, hit the grease and fall into the bucket.

Or take an empty tin can with a lid on both ends (empty canned milk or soup can works well) and run a wire through the can with wire strung across the bucket secured to each side of the bucket. Gob of peanut butter on the can and a plank leaning against the bucket but with no overhang. The mice then run up the plank, leap over to the tin can which spins on the wire and the mouse then falls off the spinning can into the bucket of water.

I picked up the electronic sound emitters that the mice don't like, plugged them in our garage, been here 13 years, mice free so far. We do have a garden and stuff that mice would like.

I had a squirrel chew thru the fuel line on a Dakota a couple of years ago. Dealer said rubber hoses are coated in peanut oil during manufacture process, which attracts squirrels and mice. He said to try Pine Sol. Sprayed it all over the bottom of the truck and then dumped the rest of the bottle on the ground under and around the truck. Problem solved.
