That's ridiculous. I will admit that it's fairly cool and makes me consider doing a similar thing with one of the new Android Tablets soon to be released, but it's still RIDICULOUS!

 

Why is it rediculous? Its way cheaper and more functional than custom building a really complicated carputer.

Ummm.....OK....that's pretty sick really! Might as well live in my truck if I had all this in there. Put a shell on and a 32" plasma in the bed.....xbox....wood stove...! Rent would be cheap!

 

you might want to look into the overheating aspect of the screen. It tends to shut down alot if in direct sunlight.

I already run all my music through my iPod to the head unit. I end up using my iphone for GPS and all kinds of other stuff. If the iPad could replace the head unit and somehow be wired into the Sirius antenna that came stock on my truck to utilize that for a GPS service I'd jump on this. Much cheaper than some of the other head unit screen options, less space consuming, and more potential uses. I know there is an inclinometer/altimeter/compass/GPS app for the iPhone... put that on the iPad and it would be a neat feature for offroading.

None of it is "needed" but it would be cool.

 

yeah i know about tint, however in so-cal even with full tint its gets hotter than a mo-fo inside. I will have to find the video of it shutting down and the temp it shuts down at

Issue with this would wind up being that it is only as good as the 3g network... Good luck getting service in the middle of no where where I would actually need it to navigate. If only there was a way to use an actual GPS trough the Ipad. Or am I wrong?

 

That was my thought, if we could hijack the cab-mounted Sirius antenna to use with an iPad compatible GPS service this would be perfect. Without the GPS service I couldn't justify messing with it just for the ease of radio control.

The more I think about it Netbook computers are getting dirt cheap these days, if there is one that is also touch screen (and I thought I saw one last time I was in Best Buy) it would just be a matter of elongating the wires and mounting the screen into the dash to make a carputer. From there obviously you would need centrafuse 3.0, a USB Garmin GPS unit, the $30 software to make the two talk but then you are all set... until the expected but unkown SNAFU...

 

^^not actually true if you do a bunch more research....they fixed this feature and never once in the car installs this guy has done has there ever been a problem

 

So what is the realistic possibilities of using an iPad in the dash and making it worthwhile? I'm not a car audio guy. 3G and internet is cool in the city, but real GPS is a must 100% of the time or this isn't worth doing.

A) Is it possible to hijack the already present sat radio antenna (or similar) for the iPad and pay for a montly GPS subscription? Relying on AT&T's BS triangulation "GPS" is not an option when I'm hunting/camping.

B) Can it be hard wired for power so the battery life is not an issue?

If there is a way to do those two things I would pop an iPad in there. I've never put a cd in my truck since I bought it, so having full touch screen functionality of an iPad for music would be awesome. I understand what you guys are saying about it being distracting; but for me at least, it would be safer than me fumbling with my iPod/iPhone hooked up to the AUX port.
