Mice chewed wire harness... Again

im surprised you're getting an issue if you're parked inside...I've been parking my truck outside for the past 3 years and no sign of mice.

Me too. Was hoping someone would post it. I don’t know about anybody else but there’s a part of me that finds the traps that drown the mice slowly kind of inhumane.

Don’t get me wrong, I get it, trust me. Not making a moral judgement here. I’m a lifelong hunter and fisherman. It just bothers me a bit and I’d personally rather find something that would take care of the problem in a way that kills them faster.

Not knocking it, or anyone who does it. I’d do it myself if there is no other alternative, it’s obviously effective and a great solution for those with a serious problem. Just wish it would kill them more quickly.

Technically engines are like compressors and compressors have motors.

 

Inside is where the issue is worst. That’s where the mice are. The second time it happened to me, the mechanic working on my truck actually caught the live mouse that had set up residency in my engine compartment.

Really it just comes down to you either have mice or you don’t. Also, I wasn’t aware that the Toyota wiring harness was made of soy. That explains a lot.

Edited just to add that another contributor to my issue is that I stored huge bags of dog food and bird seed in my pole barn where my truck was parked. Not a good idea.

 

Look up Shawn Wood's channel on YouTube for education and entertainment. You'll get all kinds of techniques to capture/kill the bastards. Also can anything be done to seal your garage better? Never had chewing but did have issues with mice/rats getting into stuff in my garage. I packed steel wool and used Great Stuff foam around all the gaps where possible. I also put better flashing and seals on both the large car door and small people door. Mouse population in next to non-existent in my garage now. I have no cat and haven't caught a mouse in traps in over a year.

I recommend that you buy and place 4 Rodent Bait Stations on each wheels/tires. Most likely the mice are climbing through up on your tires to get to the engine compartment.
I bought mine at Amazon ( Bell Rodent Bait Station and Contrac block bait.)

 

You are going to need more Honda tape for all of those pretty colored wires there are under and inside our trucks.

I use cayenne pepper in the engine bay- wet it all down, sprinkle with pepper, let dry and repeat every month. Rabbits, wood rats, mice, squirrels and mechanics hate the stuff, but I love it.

 

And the next time you leave your truck for two weeks, consider something like this porcupine proofing people have to put around their cars when they are off backpacking in BC Canada:

 

Wow! Lol, I’ve never seen that before. I know about Porkies but wouldn’t think that would keep a determined one out. Full grown porcupines are huge animals and pretty strong.

 

Yeah I’d hate to get back to my car and find one stuck under it behind the netting! But I bet OP can probably use screen netting or something like that around his truck if he has to leave it in the garage for weeks on end.

 

If you can see light under doors or around any openings, mice will get in.

 

I know this is effective, but I'm concerned about secondary poisoning. We have dogs, chickens and a pet that has no name (supposed to eat mice).

I've done research on rodenticides, and seen plenty of unintentional poisoning.

 

I don’t use it either. Strychnine poisoning and hawks is common in our area. I was serious about the porcupine type fencing, maybe some window screen material? If you do a good job putting it tightly around the bottom your truck when you leave it parked for awhile, maybe with bungee cords, it will survive the onslaught. Some of the people here mentioned the water bucket trap, they do work well. I’ve visited a back country ranger friend of mine once a long time ago at her cabin, and she had two of those inside. There was splashing in the buckets all night long, and in the morning they had a total of about a dozen mice!
