2016 front differential breather line issues

Hi, im new to this forum. Recently, with help from many of you fine folks ive made some quick fixes to my taco with some of the threads on here.

Lemme cut to the chase, twice now this year my front differential breather hose has disconnected completely from the differential. Currently the underside of my truck is soaked in gear oil from it. Toyota fixed it for free the first time because it was related to their previous work. Now its disconnected again and im curious as to why? And how can i get it back together without dropping the front end of my vehicle? I also cant put the hoses back together, something is pinning them against eachother and dont want to tear them up in the process with pliers.

I hardly crawl, go through puddles, mud or really anything. This thing experiences washboarded forest service roads during hunting season but thats about it.

How is this happening and what can i do to stop it from happening in the future?



UPDATE: dealer fixed it for free. Had to wait for new breather valve to be installed. He said the first time i brought it to them he said that it somehow was cut due to improper installation or removal when removing the front end. That tech who worked on my truck the very first time in February was fired/left in March. So somehow the rubber hose was cut where i couldnt see it and the metal line slipped out the side.

Did you change your factory fill to a product that may have swollen the hose rubber?

 

No, any fluid change happened with the toyota dealership. I figure they would have put toyota factory gear oil in it

 

Ok. I’ve heard stories of certain synthetic oils swelling rubber parts. I wasn’t sure if the hose got swollen etc and was now the wrong ID size for the vent tube.

Yea same here. Book apparently calls for 75w85 but many stores only sell the 75w90. I wouldve changed the fluid with the 90 but might as well make the dealer fix it and theyll put the right stuff in.

 

Unfortunately. Gonna have to flex seal it here soon. Lol

It sounds like this is actually your problem. The fact that you can’t put the hose back on the nipple freely means something is catching / pinching it. This is probably why it came loose (got pulled off) in the first place. I’d spend some time under the vehicle and figure out where it’s getting pinched.
Easy check might be to jack the front up from the frame (not suspension), as see if it comes loose, if not move the steering wheel and see if it comes loose. One of those will be easy checks to see if either are the issue.

 

Thats what i would think should be on there. Backstory - this is the second time its happened. So i got this truck in December with 30k on it. The first day i had it, i checked it for any leaks or anything wrong underneath. I noticed i had the timing chain cover leak that a lot of these 2016 tacomas have. So they had to remove my entire front end and motor to work on it. The tech that worked on it didnt properly reinstall the breather assembly. So a week later i brought it back in and they fixed it. 4 months go by and that timing cover leak came back because the tech didnt properly repair that too. So same process and 2 or so months later to last week i smelled the gear oil burning on my exhaust. Same issue just took longer than the last time. Just odd for as little as i have used 4wd over the last few months.
