Rusty Bed

Let me explain the situation.

A rust spot showed up recently in the bed of my truck near the right wheel well, right on the seam where the caulk is. I let it got for a few weeks and just today decided enough was enough. Upon closer inspection I have a few spots that need repair along the caulk line in the bed. Most of the rust appears to be coming through from the bottom!!

So, how difficult is it to remove the bed? I was thinking I could remove the bed and address the rust at the source!

Anyone in South Texas(Near SPI) that wants to help???

its very easy to remove the bed, just make sure you have enough people to safely carry it off

 

i was going to ask the same question of removing the bed


i'm looking at a tacoma that has a step side and eventually i'd swap it for a regular size bed, just wanted to know the work involved etc

 

all there is are i think 4 or 6 bolts holding it to the frame and then remove your gas fill neck from your bed side and just pick up the bed with a few guys and its off.

 

beauty, i also assume you have to remove the wiring from the tail lights lol

 

You beat me to it I'm pretty sure that's all you have to do I plan on doing it before this winter to do an under coating.


Yeah there is the wires as well for the lights

 

I have the same type of rust on the right side caulk line as well. I took care of it from the top but rust worked its way thru. I'm assuming it's coming from the bottom. Can we get to it without removing the bed?

 

depending how bad it is i'm sure you could. there is a lot of room under our beds and not many things blocking it so unless its above your gas tank i would assume you could get to it

 

What's the best way of taking care of the rust from below? I'm thinking sanding the rust off, spray on naval jelly and then spray on rubber undercoating? Would this be effective if I just spot apply it where ever rust exist or do I really need to spray the whole area?

 

as long as you remove all the rust from the area you should be fine

 

I went all out and have a 5 step process that I am going to use. They are all Eastwood products.

1. Prep Spray - cleans the area.

2. Rust Converter - "transforms rust into a paintable surface"

3. Rust Encapsulator - seals and stops the rust

4. Chasse Black - Top coat to protect the Encapsulator

5. Heavy Duty Anti Rust - "Wax Film"

Thats my plan after I attack the rust with a wire brush and grinder to try and remove as much as I can.

 

nice, if you have a grinder you can get a wire wheel and that would tear that rust right out of there.
