Question for those who have upgraded their speakers

I've done the Subaru tweeter upgrade and it made a world of difference. How much more improvement can I expect from upgrading the door speakers to Kickers?

When I see posts on speakers, majority are followed by kicker. Why kicker? Legitimately curious. I haven’t done any audio upgrades yet and Im wondering if there is better quality than kicker or if it’s easier r&r

 

I upgraded mine to Kickers a month or so ago, when I did the Meso Puddle Light install. HUGE difference in sound. Why did I choose Kicker? 2 reasons:
1. Wanted to stay consistent with the tweeter upgrades (lame, yes, but it’s a reason).
2. Value. The Kickers are reasonably priced, easy to install, and easily out perform the factory garbage. I would highly recommend buying from Crutchfield, as they will include the mounting & wiring adaptor with the purchase.

 

I went with the Subaru tweeters because they are fully plug and play compatible with the OEM Toyota tweeters. Given how good they sound, I'll upgrade the door speakers to Kickers too. Other brands may be better, I dunno.

 

People like kickers because they have “big magnets”


Having worked at an audio shop I perfer JL Audio. I’ve used high dollar Focal, MB Quart and other premium audio stuff and for the price is right in the ballpark.

 

It made a world of difference in my truck, especially since I used 6.5” mid bass drivers (with Metra Toyota adapters and harnesses) The subaru tweeters handle the treble just fine by themselves I find, so adding coaxial speakers is a waste of some of the power that could be improving bass/mid frequencies. Even then- there are many other less expensive drivers you can use besides the kickers that will give good results. The sensitivity rating is key.

 

What ever brand of speaker you choose, just keep the wattage rating low (I think the OE system is about 60w?). You will not have the power to drive high wattage speakers. And the sound quality will be worse using high wattage speakers unless you plan on installing an amp too.

Mostly because a lot of people went that direction. There are a lot of good speakers on the market. Just make sure they fit.

 

I did the Kicker / Subaru tweeters, put HATs in the front doors and Hertz in the back. Also put in a Pioneer compact subwoofer (TS-WX400DA 100-watt). Very pleased with the resulting sound. It's certainly not top-notch, but it's good considering the limitations (speaker wiring, "de-tuned" sound, etc) of the factory system.

A speaker upgrade is well worth it, but a powered sub (even a small one) really makes a difference in the overall sound.

 

Agreed. Many better options than Kickers, or other brands with heavy marketing.

 

I guess I haven’t looked- the tweeter upgrade you refer is the same as the Subaru tweeter posted about the forum? And they are kickers?

So the Subaru’s are the only plug n play after markets?

Didn’t know that either (don’t plan on added a amp personally)

IMO the best speaker mod I did was putting a sub under the seat in addition to the door speakers.
Amazing upgrade. Many compliments from people.

I think that one of the suppliers (on our forum) makes an adapter harness for other speakers? Taco-Tunes maybe?

 

I think Crutchfield has speaker adapters.

 

I've seen them for the doors @ Crutchfield. Not sure about the tweets? I hope someone can confirm.

 

The amp (150 W) is built into the sub. Connects via RCA phono jacks or uses speaker inputs for sense. I have an aftermarket Pioneer and use RCA phono input.
It rocks. It vibrates the rear view mirror.

 

Yes, the Subaru tweeters are made by Kicker.

 

Do the Subaru tweeters work for the 2nd Gens?

 

I went with the Subaru tweeters and Rockford Fosgate door speakers, because I’ve always loved RF stuff. Very happy with the combo.
