It’s probably just where you get your news from. The long piece in the NYT on the recent Nobel Prize in Chem mentions it among many other things. Also, as I often point out, the harmful effects are much less than those of conventional ICEs. There are extensive studies on these things. Here are some links for you:

I maintain a diesel electric hybrid like a locomotive is the way of the future with heavy trucks. An engine running a generator can be run at it's most efficient almost 100% of the time. Removing most of the mechanical components, like transmissions and possibly differentials if they're 4 wheel direct drive motors dramatically reduces losses to friction as well.

I don't think there is a singular solution to transportation, full electric is great for large city operation or for calculated distances. That fuel cell technology seems promising for possible rural locations or for constant over the road use. And Hybrids seem like a pretty good compromise for most applications.

Audi is coming out with a twin turbo V6 with a mild hybrid drive train. Electric motors help with launch and come into play again when cruising on the highway.

Might the soon to be launched next gen Tundra have a similar set up and just drop the V8? And then the next gen Taco have something similar with maybe a single turbo or single electric motor?

Or maybe Tundra gets the BMW V6 turbo from the Supra? Expensive motor, no doubt, but Toyota doesn't make that many Tundras. They don't make many Supras either but maybe getting BMW to build more engines for 2 vehicles will lower their cost to purchase the engine.

I’d rather see a remapped version of the 350hp V6 hybrid engine Toyota stuck in the LC500h. That coupe weighs about the same as our trucks and gets a sub-5 second 0-60...and it averages 30mpg.

    They wouldn’t put a v8 in a Tacoma because 1) they aren’t retarded 2) this isn’t a 1995 Pontiac you’re trying to impress your friends with.

I see a mix of Audi and BMW in the design.

Toyota conservative, but it’s one good looking sedan. It also looks production ready judging from the mirrors, etc. Toyota has finally come to realize that a good looking car sells. The current Mirai looks like a science experiment.

Hybrids are just more complication added.

I think it’s better just to go full ev.

I say go hybrid. Continue to reduce the demand and price of gas. My love for vehicles that get terrible gas mileage will get cheaper and they can sleep better at night.

This is a great conversation. I would all over a hybrid Tacoma. The current 3.5L with electric motor providing bottom end torque? A great combination indeed.

Regarding the demand of gas, some states are now looking at taxing you on mileage instead of having the tax built into the price of gas because cars have gotten much more efficient. I'm %100 sure they definitely won't find a reason to keep the gas tax in place after the mileage tax is applied...
