9 or 10 inch wide wheels?

Looking to go wider with my wheels and tires. From what I understand my stock 2003 wheels are 8 inch wide and have a 0 offset. Am I right that I need to find a 9 or 10 inch wide wheel with a 0 offset to keep the inside wall of the tire in the same place? This would put the outer wall more even with the fender flare correct? Thanks!

 

No. The 9” with 0 offset put the inside a 1/2” closer and the 10” will put 1” closer. What size tire are you planning on running?

 

Ugh. That’s not what the shady dude explained to me. Glad I asked. Not sure on tire size since I’m not sure on wheels yet. I tried to stop by a local @Discount Tire today and pick their brain but they closed at 12 today so I couldn't talk with anyone. Kinda stinks since I need these tires done before the weekend.

 

A 9”’wheel with 0 offset will have a backspace of 5”. Thats about as much backspace the Tacoma will tolerate depending on tire size. A 10” wheel 0 offset will have 5 1/2 “ backspace with that more than likely the tire will rub the uca. most guys will run 9” with a -12 offset but then depending on tire size you could rub fender or cab mount and half to deal with that. It kinda a double edge sword. What look are wanting ?

 

Do you have a lift? What size? What size tire are you currently running and are you going larger?

 

I run a 285/70/17 on a 17x8.5 -10 offset. Here’s what that looks like.

 

Ok. I’m currently just running stock 265s. I don’t have any lift beyond the TRD. There is a first gen on Instagram that looks amazing. Kodastacoma. I’ll try it get an image if I can. His tire and wheel stance looks amazing and stable. That’s what I’m aiming for. Clearly I’m misunderstanding a ton of stuff still though.

 

This is the look/stance I am interested in. I believe he has 33s on though or maybe even larger. Hoping to replicate this but without a lift if it’s possible.

 

A 10" wide wheel will seriously limit your tire choices. A 265 will be too narrow and even a 275 is questionable. You will be stuck with 285s and wider. Even a 9" wheel is a little wide for mid-sized trucks IMO. I'd love to run a 255 but can't with my 9" wheels.

 

To mimic the stance in the photo you posted you don't need a crazy wide wheel. You need less wheel offset. Less offset pushes the centerline of the wheel away from the hub so the wheel moves towards the fender or even outside the fender.

 

Ok. So what I read was the first gen stock is a 0 offset. If I get a wheel with a negative offset it will move the outer wall towards the outside line of my truck? Then the amount it moves it will be based on the amount of the offset. Am I understanding this right? Thank you!

 

First confirm you have factory wheels. Toyota wasn’t known for putting a 8” wheel on from the factory. Most of the factory wheels are 7” and have positive offset. Post a pic of the wheels you have on currently.

Thank you for the photo. Can you tell me why the tire and wheel looks so different in the wheel well? Do you have a higher lift? My visual spatial awareness is awful but it looks like way more open area in your wheel well. Maybe the image I put up has 35 inch tires? Would that change the look?

 

Those should be either 15x7 or 16x7 +15 offset.

 

The truck you posted appears to have a lift had does my first gen. You truck looks completely stock and I assume your planning on keeping it that way?

 

I would like to put a lift on it but have not settled on one yet and it will be a bit down the road I think. Says the rims are 6.5jx16 ET30. Does that mean they are 6.5 inch wide? I know they are 16s. Man I wish discount tire would have been open for me to talk to the yesterday. This is confusing.

 

Correct according that the wheel 16x6.5 +30 offset. Giving it a 4.5” backspace. So a 8” wheel 0 offset should put the tire approximately 3/4” further out than what you currently have since it also has 4.5” backspace. Yes it can be confusing if you don’t fully understand offset and backspacing of wheels.

 

If you not planning on lifting any time soon personally I’d go with a 16x8 0 offset wheel. Then when you lift you can go with a more aggressive tire and wheel combo.
