Was that the same muddy spot we hit with the big group? A little ways after that, there was I think two small water crossings, then the red gate that never opens. I dont remember seeing a green gate, but it's been a while.

Definitely a great ride, I'm up for trying to do it again before the musterground side is closed for the season.

I don't think so. We got everyone turned around at the abandoned car and headed back to the trailhead because it was getting late and we weren't sure how far the Auger hole gate was.

    Kyle,
While messing around with my Gaia trip, I accidently deleted it. Is it possible for you to upload yours if you get a chance?

Fixing to purchase the basic here in a minute. Not sure I want to do the other one at $49 a year.

    Thanks.

Sapphire got a pretty good rain 2 weeks ago. The temps dropped and it's been pretty cloudy so it's stayed muddy since.

I didn't record much of the trip, since I had truckbeans track uploaded in mine.

His file is uploaded in post #167 in the musterground thread though.

Yeah the yearly cost isn't great but I have loved having the app in general. I dont remember the differences between the basic and the 49/yr version.

    @EricL
Double checked. Yea, that's the same map. I have it in a read only file and it's huge.
I may have gottennnit from you thru one drive or some other large file transfer a while back.

It's free at 2 places but it's not out with the other maps, You have to ask for it and give the secret code word.

OP edited to post the OpenStreetMap map link. I had forgotten about that guy, but it really does a good job to put the two NC and SC areas in perspective. Here is a link to it, also.

    https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/74170335#map=15/35.0348/-82.9594

@Matic my memory of the big CMR trip was that we turned around at the third marked water crossing near Hillard Falls. I know it wasn't much further than that to the red gate at the border, but during the big trip I couldn't remember how far it was and didn't want to have people making the trip back out in the dark.

This is the final red gate from my last trip to the top of the ridge. I haven't been back up there since early-ish last year.

    20180314_141059.jpg

This is the only really muddy slick spot that I can think of on the NC game lands side. None of us had any real problems with it.

    IMG_0475.jpg

So as I am virtually driving along the OpenStreetMap from Chestnut Mountain Rd > Turkeypen Gap > Auger Hole Rd > Bridge crossing > Games lands > Fallen tree we had to drag Adam under > Couple of dips and that slick muddy spot up through the game lands > Three smaller water crossings at Bearcamp Creek, then the final red bridge at the NC/SC border. Where is the green gate located you mentioned in perspective to those locations?

Yea. That 1st pic.....that gates open.
And there is a green gate further south that is open as well. Theres like 2 gates within probably 50 yrds of each other.
We sent Kent ahead to see if it was open while we waited at the fork.

SON OF A.... :angrygirl: That's the gate I was told by multiple rangers that it never opens. Man, I really wish I had gone out there now. If it wasn't already after 1 I would be headed out the door on my way up there now!

The story is... that gate fell off the side of the MT where it locked.
    Thats why its open.

Yeah, somebody with the help of a chain helped that gate off the side of the mountain. When musterground is open it would be nice if it was just open since at that point its legal to be on either side of the gate.

I think the biggest thing they worry about is hunters being in the wrong state without knowing. Because of hunting Licenses

That makes sense although the onus should still be on the hunter if they mess up. An "entering x state sign" could be used. I guess signs are easier to destroy than gates though.

I’ve got one left to burn and haven’t decided when. A nice, long camping trip sounds good though.
