Hello everyone and sorry for the long post, I would like to be as thorough as possible. I have a 2019 Trd sport and it is my first 4X4 vehicle. After doing some stupid things in a parking lot and after tons of research and reading the owners manual I am now up to speed as to the difference between AWD and 4WD and how to properly use the 4WD system.

With that being said, prior to doing my research I was bored in a parking lot waiting for a friend and I decided “hey let’s lube up and try the 4x4 system .” So I put the car in 4H and tried pulling out in reverse at an angle and noticed that the car would not go even while giving it some gas (driveline binding). I didn’t press on the gas too hard to make anything skip/chirp (30% pedal press maybe, enough to make it jerk back a tiny bit) so I put it back into 2H and drove into another section of the parking lot. My big brain decided to put it into 4H again and tried making a right turn and noticed that it was locking up again (binding again) and gave it as much gas as I did as my previous attempt. I put it back into 2H and everything seemed normal on the way home, no abnormal sounds or anything while driving and turning.

My question is, after my stupid stunt in the parking lot of pressing the gas while the driveline was binding up are there any signs of damage that I should watch out for going forward? Did I hurt my new baby a lot? Thanks guys!

EDIT: Thanks everyone for your input! If I broke something significant at 500 miles I would have drowned in shame lmao. Thanks again for the peace of mind!

You’ll be fine, especially if getting out of 4hi into 2hi wasn’t dramatic and horribly clunky.

They're pretty tough. I wouldn't be worried, especially since you didn't force it.

    BTW, welcome to the forum!

That reminds me... I had a friend try to shift his Jeep into 4h doing 70mph and the thing shut off in the middle of the highway lmao. 4wd never worked again.

    You aren’t that stupid

Well according to 45% of Tacoma owners here on TW...

Your truck will probably grenade soon. They probably also want to reiterate that your are in-fact “stupid”. And that if your truck doesn’t grenade in the next 200 miles, you still have some serious internal damage to your transfer case.

In reality, you’re fine and so is the truck. Just don’t drop it in 4wd and cut the wheel as tight as you can trying to drive in circles for 5 minutes.

Welcome to TW. Take your truck on a dirt road and use 4H and 4L, I'm sure it's fine, but this will ease your worries.

If you ever take your truck out wheeling, where you really need 4wd, what you did in the parking lot is nothing. I've seen people beat the ever living crap out of their vehicles in Moab without a problem. (I've also seen things blow up too, but that's after some VERY stupid use of the gas pedal.) You don't have to be afraid of 4wd in a Tacoma.
