Okay, I’ll admit this right off - I’m dumb.

I bought my 19 DCSB SR weeks ago. Since then, I’ve been looking and searching and reading and researching, but there are just too many options and I’m overwhelmed.

I’m an electrician. I need a service place to lock up my tools, a weather proof place to haul supplies, and a decent rack to carry ladders and sometimes lumber and pipe and such. I’ve got a cheap-ish lockable Craftsman tool box, which I’m fine with.

What I’m really after is one of two solutions. Either a decent secure/lockable tonneau cover (not rollup) that plays nice with a decent rack (front and back of bed), OR a tonneau that plays nice with my tool box plus a decent rack (front and back of bed). Did I describe that properly?

    Rack style, similar to this:

    https://realtruck.com/p/tracrac-sr-sliding-truck-rack/v/toyota/tacoma/2019/

Doesn’t seem like every tonneau cover plays nice with bed racks, and even fewer will fit with a tool box. For that matter, most racks don’t seem like they’d play nice with a tool box. Sigh. SO many options to wade through.

I’m on a budget, and I don’t need it all right immediately now. So it needn’t be top of the line, just serviceable.

Can anybody make suggestions? Or post pics of such a setup? I know, this is a can of worms, and why don’t I try the search (like I said, I’ve BEEN searching).

Much obliged! You guys are the best.

Is the cost of a hard shell holding you back? Seems like you could get one with a rack and be covered for most situations.. but those things are pricey.... .

I hadn’t thought of a cap, mostly because it would make it harder to carry larger or longer items. Though I guess I could just strap bigger ladders, or pipe, or longer cuts of lumber to the top if I got a rack for it. They’re quite expensive however.

I like the security of a tool box. A soft tonneau cover could easily be sliced open. Then again, nothing is theft-proof. But a hard tonneau cover would make it more difficult to get into. Maybe a hard tonneau and remove the tool box.

When I look at pictures of people’s tonneau covers, and pictures of most racks, it doesn’t look like they’d be compatible with each other.

Have you looked at the last line of defense YouTube walk around on the diamondback tonneau with rack set up? I know he uses it for his RTT. But some ideas there?
His video is long but maybe skip around??

I have a plastic tool box I got from my dad years ago. I can load it by myself pretty quick. the factory tie down handles hold it in place just fine (wouldnt want to take on serious off road terrain.) Im going to add a ladder rack. This one is on sale. After paging through all the reviews found a guy with a Tacoma who said it wouldnt fit! To bad I was liking this one for the price! https://www.discountramps.com/works...0stW7rry237jB_RyUiLFb57l5LF18mBBoCOPQQAvD_BwE there are nicer tool boxes out there but my plastic one is lockable and most importantly I can take it in and out of truck alone.

Not really helpful for you since it doesn’t address your need for a toolbox (also a roll up) but I wanted a cover and racks. The only one I found that had decent reviews was the RetraxOne XR that works with the Yakima Overhaul Racks or Thule racks. I think one of the bakflips used to work with some racks but not sure if it fit on the 3rd Gen Tacoma’s.

I’d reach out to tonneaufactoryoutlet who is a vendor on this site and maybe they can help you out.

    Good luck!

    Hey.OP,
Did you ever get your rack/cover solution? I'm looking for similar (but smaller tool box that fits between and below the wheel wells).

The Extang Solid Fold tonneau cover may work with the KB Voodo Hi Rise Crossbars.

Not perfect, but here is why I think it may work.

    1. The Solid Fold sits on top of bed so it fits many tool boxes like Ridgid Stackable etc. (Flush tonneaus dont).
    2. The KB voodoo bars attach to factory rails, but can be removed quickly without tools if you need to fold up the tonneau.
