    I know you probably don't want to hear this, but as a young driver you should definitely lean into the 2nd gen for the increased saifty features alone. The 1st generation Tacomas are my favorite vehicle of all time and I'll never be able to sell mine, HOWEVER these things are not very good when it comes to airbags, side impacts, and rolling... The second and turd-gens (jk, jk) are far more safer than the earlier models. As a less experienced driver that is a considerable difference that should be a large factor in the decision process. Not to mention you're going to be saving a lot on insurance payments with the newer gens...

    I had a 2nd gen and was in a wreck with it and you're correct. in the rain i spun on the highway and nailed the front end of a tahoe while i was sideways and we slid into the guard rail and i pinned him into it and we slid another 100ish feet or so and i can tell you i felt absolutely none of it. i loved my second gen but had to sell it when my son got too big for the back seat but when he gets older and wants a truck i'll look into another one for him.
