What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Correct. The rotor should not move (at all) towards the engine. As long as the resistance is smooth, that should be good.

 

And if the rotor has play in it laterally, that indicates a bad wheel bearing?

Could this be coming from the rear axle too?

 

If your rotor has any play at all (side to side - towards/away from spindle) your bearing is bad.


Sure, a sould could be coming from your rear axle... you could have worn or misadjusted brake shoes. Bad rear bearing or something else.

Before you start chasing it, I'd suggest ruling out the front.

Ya... I thought about doing mine, because I replaced the hub bearings during my 4x swap. But I was finding them at 80 each.... ya, fuck that.

 

Sounds about right. I wonder if I could find an aftermarket two piece replacement so the hub doesn't have to come off.

Wheel bearings remain one of the things I'd let a shop do, I wouldn't want to deal with that. I've got no room for error, especially on my daily.

 

I have a shop that I use to press in mine. Though, I got everything ready for them.

 

How so?

 

I pulled the knuckle, had the bearing, seal, and special tool ready. The shop did the press work. I just dropped off the parts and knuckle. They've done a few bearing press jobs for me over the years. I guess it depends on the area and the willingness of a shop just do the press work.

 

Oh yeah, I figured that’s expected of a press job to remove the knuckle from the vehicle. I’ll search around if they end up being bad.

 

I did it. But that’s because I did new hubs, bearings, spindles... etc

 

Well, it's not every day that I get to go camping with my dad, and it's not that often that I camp in the same spot for more than one night. I mean, I guess we camped in the same spot two nights in a row on the Idaho BDR when a brake caliper seized up, but that was clearly an exceptional situation! Plus, after last year's adventure - my first time experiencing one of Pops favorite spots in the Sierras - I knew this was a place that I wanted to return. Likely, for years to come. It really is a special place.

So, early in the summer, we arranged a week where we could get together and just go enjoy the outdoors. I forget exactly when that was going to be, but as seems to happen in life, life got in the way and we had to cancel. It was a bummer to say the least, so it was awesome that a few months later we were each able to squeak several days into our schedule to pop down to ************* for a few days.

Not a lot of shops in this area that are willing to press the bearings for any kind of reasonable price. It may be different in the Bay Area, for Tyler, but I doubt it.

 

Doing some test fitting with our KC4 brake light housings. I need to find some nylon nuts to screw into. So strange that each bolt hole is a different size from the factory.

Pretty cool that it's the same size on Gen 1 trucks as Gen 2.

 

Does his did have the needle bearings? Mine does not and would require machining the housing to accept the bushing.

 

Most 2nd gens need the bushing post lift. It was designed for them I believe. Either way, its getting installed by ECGS tomorrow morning. They said all they need is an hour.
