All you need is a flathead screwdriver and a flat area near a wall. You dont need to use a socket wrench and remove shit to make room, common misconception.

Like Hobbs said, it's very sobering.
I don't mean to trivialize it by mentioning ghost stories.
It was the greatest battle fought on the North American continent.
If the criterion is the most casualties.
The cannonade on the 3rd day before Pickett's Charge was the biggest bombardment on a field of battle.

When I was a teen, I spent a Summer working there in the YCC (Youth Conservation Corps).
That's how I got to know Colonel Sheads (he was elderly and retired). He'd come in the evening and tell us stories.
And I went on to get History degrees.

I'll tell you a few quick tidbits:

It's part of the folklore that pictures of the Slaughter Pen often don't come out.
Lots of people will tell you this in all seriousness.
The Slaughter Pen is right beside Devil's Den along Bloody Run.
Sure enough, Mrs Gritto took a couple pictures there (with a digital camera, no less) and they have reflections in them like bright spots.

By the way, Devil's Den was called by that name by the locals long before the battle.
It's very spooky there at sunset.
The Summer I worked there, I would go for a run after dinner. I intended to go out for the Cross Country team that Autumn.
I was running at sunset and thought I'd go that way.
    Alone. Youthful bravado.
So I'm hearing crickets and the usual Summer evening noises until I get there.
Then dead silence while I went through (there's a road that snakes through it between the Den proper and the Slaughter Pen).
I was spooked, I can tell you. I was running pretty darn fast by the time I got to the other side.
    I didn't do that again.

Okay, pretty weak, but that's my story. :p
I'm actually as skeptical as the next guy, probably more-so.
But the stories are fun and it really is spooky.

    Fun fact:

There are numerous equestrian statues of Union generals put up in the late 19th century.
If the horse has one hoof off the ground, the general was wounded.
If two hooves, he was killed.
That's what the Colonel told us.

I can think of two off the top of my head that illustrate the point:

Major General John Reynolds, Commander First Corps, Army of the Potomac.
Killed on McPherson Ridge, 1st day.

Major General Winfield Scott Hancock, Commander Second Corps, Army of the Potomac.
Gravely wounded at Pickett's charge, 3rd day.

By the time I get out of work late in the next week or so it should be plenty dark for me to adjust them on a wall .
