Yes. We get more ice than snow though.

a locked rear isn’t the best on Ice. Much easier to get your ass out in front of you. Just have to be aware it’s there and not throttle around a corner on an ice covered road.

I’ll add that the first time I drove my truck after I put the locker in, we had ice everywhere. Almost wrapped my truck around a telephone pole. Learned right then and there what not to do. No issues since. Easy on the throttle in a slippery turn.

now my front lunchbox is hell in the snow/ice. Understeer like crazy. Haha

Right on. But for a rig that's going to be taking me to the ski slopes in the winter, you wouldn't be afraid to run the powertrax?

I have no clue what kind of conditions you’re talking about so I hate to make that suggestion.

Personally, I haven’t found one situation where I wasn’t pleased with the performance of mine.

Fair enough. It ranges here in Cali. It can be sleet, slush, ice or deep snow.

WTH is a lunchbox locker? Is that the current vernacular for something like a Detroit?

Had Detroit in my 85 runner and my 82 longbed on 38’s. The runner was a DD and the 82 saw street time. It never bothered me when it engaged / disengaged. Just scared the hell out of uninformed passengers.

Being locked in snow sucks unless it’s really deep snow. It takes some time to get use to it. If you get stopped and the road slopes one way very much you may head that direction in a hurry from a stop.

Yeh, it's like a Detroit, but you dont have to replace the carrier. Just the spider gears.

So you'd suggest keeping it open diff? And just worry about having the right tires?

Wow. They must’ve come a long way since the 90s. Guys were always chowdering those back then. Detroit made one called the EZ-locker, which we always called a cheesy locker...

    Anyway. Back to the topic.

You will definitely need appropriate tires. A locker isn’t going to help if you’re on slicks. Unless you’re at the drag strip.

been running the no-slip on my daily for many years and i have snow most of the year. i rarely notice that its there with regular driving. If u ask me its no different than any other truck on the road with a limited slip diff especially a clutch type. both wheels are gona spin in such low traction situations.

Tires are a given, but I will be offroad 30% of the time. Sometimes in snow. Will the auto locker hurt me in the snow I suppose is my biggest concern. Making the selectable option really the only smart decision, or no?

Personally I think selectable is the best decision 100% of the time, the determining factor for most being the cost of selectable vs auto. Lunchbox lockers are very effective and much cheaper than selectable ones, but nothing beats being able to turn it on/off at your discretion.

If I had a built trail rig I towed to the trails I wouldnt waste the money on selectable and would probably just weld the rear and put a lunchbox up front. But on a daily driver there are more factors to consider.

I think you’d be fine with some type of limited slip. With 4wd, good tires and a limited slip, you’re going to be fine.

After all the discussion and doing some more research. I think you're on the right track. Now thinking some good tires and a mechanical lsd like a truetrac in the rear and I should be doing well for what I need.
