Wife and I were in rout to our sons place 3 hours away. We were about a 1/2 hour from our destination cruising about 75 mph when all of a sudden the cruise kicked off and slowed way up and the check engine and trac off lights came on.
Upper and lower secondary air pump took a chit covered in full by a TSB. The dealer gave us a 2019 Tacoma and wasn’t impressed after two days of driving. Steering wheel is the same in my 2012 along with the dash is about the same with the exception of the radio.
When accelerating the transmission acted like is didn’t know what gear it wanted past 2nd gear.
That front radar thing I absolutely HATED. Way to sensitive for highway driving. Forces you to change lanes way to early to pass and at times I had to manually accelerate to keep from holding up traffic.
Wife wants a 4R or Tacoma 4 door. We’ll scratch the Tacoma. I hope the 4R’s are better!

The if the 4Runner has the radar thing for cruise control, it's going to be the same. I'm not familiar with that system if you can turn that off or not. My father's 2018 Tundra has that and noticed the same things as you.

I wasn't that impressed with my 2017 Tacoma's trans and engine tune when I had it, but if I had kept it, I would've added the OVTune and done gears. Loved everything else about the truck. To me the 4.0 has more low end grunt, but if I had the ability to change the way the truck shifted back when I had it, I would've kept it probably. Anyways, at least you got to test drive it good.

I had the same experience with a 2018 TRD Sport rental while my 07 Tacoma frame was replaced. I hated the transmission for the same reason you stated.

You can adjust the distance for the radar cruise control

The new 2020 Tacoma supposedly fixed the transmission problem and drives a lot better.

The TSS is on a lot of cars and it gets worse, some of the new stuff tries to control the wheel too. At least that’s what the dealer told my brother in law on one of the sedans. Hard nope, really wish now that I didn’t have tss. I don’t like adaptive cruise outside of a few instances and the auto brake is crap as it goes off at times going under a overpass and auto headlights just blind people

They have said that every years since they came out with the 3rd. Just buy a MT and it’s fixed :)

I heard it was a software issue in the 18s and 19s that you could have corrected. I drove the rental for 6 weeks and could not get used to the transmission. As earlier stated it felt stuck in second gear.

Tunes help, we use to run custom maps in our street bikes after enough performance changes. It helpedsame as OVtune does with these but it’s expensive.
