Ordering a 2020 Army Green TRD Pro (Manual vs Auto) Opinions Wanted

    Hi all,

I recently placed an order for a 2020 Tacoma TRD Pro in Army Green with a manual transmission. It’s been a little over a week, and I have not heard from the dealer when it will be built & delivered.

    However...

The dealer says they are getting an Army Green TRD Pro with an automatic transmission sometime this month. So my question is, should I buy the automatic instead of a manual (in an effort to get it much sooner) or should I wait for a manual to be built?

It sounds like it could be several months before the manual is built. Some are even saying March 2020 delivery!

I have driven the 2020 automatic, but didn’t drive it at high speed. Are there any 2020 automatic owners out there that notice a difference between the 2019 and 2020 AT?

As much as I would like a manual, I would like to get the truck sooner than later.
Thanks for any advice you may have.

Look around at other dealers. If you want an M/T, I would wait for it. Nothing like getting the AT..driving it for a while and wishing you had waited for the MT. The AT really sucks for road trips if you have to go up hills and steep grades..IMO. The only reason why I was able to tolerate my truck on my road trip last weekend was that I had gear lock enabled via OVTune.

Go test drive the two, then get what you want even if you have to wait a few months.

Wait for it - My dealer told me my OR could be available in 4-5 weeks for the auto vs 7-9 weeks for the manual. You'd be second guessing your decision all the time if you don't wait and truly want the MT. I've also heard enough about the poor driving characteristics of the AT to stay away - I especially think I'd be let down given the wonderful AT drive train currently in my 2nd gen.

For a 50k truck, get exactly what you want, even if that means waiting.

I agree. Be patient and wait or you will regret your purchase. Just remind yourself that you are saving over $2,500 by not settling for a slush box automatic!

Buy the truck you want... dealers do this shit all the time to make a sale now, now, now... it likely doesn't help they know you want it now now now...
If you want a manual, buy a manual .... it'll be built and delivered sooner than you think, it's only coming from San Antonio for crying out loud. I'd bet a maximum wait time is 6 weeks to the farthest parts of CONUS, likely 4 in TX.

From what I understand the San Antonio plant builds manuals in batches.

I second this. I went from a manual Frontier to an auto in my 2017 Tacoma. I purchased an auto due to lack of inventory and dealers not willing to deal on the manuals in stock. I literally regret not having the manual everyday. Wait it out or you will second guess it later.

I am pretty confident that the 4th generation Tacoma won’t have a 3-pedal option. Get ‘em while you can...

If you get the auto I would factor in the price of re-gearing

Love my manual Pro and would not even consider having in in Auto. I had to wait longer and delay that instant gratification but well worth it. I'm pretty sure the manuals are on a 3 month cycle so if you miss one you have to wait for the next one.

Also like @TRDProOne said manuals are unfortunately probably on borrowed time and you have to get while the getting is good.

What part of the country are you in?

If it were me, I would 1,000,000% wait for the manual and I would have picked the exact same truck you did. Auto wouldn't even be an option, regardless of any shifting issues.

Wait for the one you want and you will be happy. Good luck and great choice

That means no 4 gen for me. So will have to buy the most recent 3rd gen and stick to it. Really hope it's not the case.

    1. Get manual while you still can.
    2. Show your support for manual, so maybe Toyota keep making them.
    3. Get manual while you still can.

My sales guy just texted me. Arrived at the dealer 30 min ago. Hoping to get it this afternoon. It's a TRD PRO with MT. As far as I know, they build them in batches. Mine was built on 9/30. You may have to wait until the next batch of MT's.
