17" rims on a 2001 Double cab - Is it possible?

Is it possible to put 17" rims on a 2001 Double cab with no rubbing? I understand from the sticky that the largest tire size is For 2004 and below: 265/75/16.
Is it possible to use a 17" rim and compensate for the extra rim size by getting a smaller sidewall tire?

If so what is the tire size needed? (I tried to make the math work but i'm apparently stupid)

I want to get a nice set of 17's for summer and rock the stock 16's for winter.

Any recommendations for a solid winter tire?

 

Its possible but will rub if u make any sharp turns and yea it will compensate if u get a smaller sidewall with a 17 rim.

 

the size of the rim has nothing to do with rubbing.

a 265/75R16 is 31.7'' tall, and 11ish inches wide, if you get a tire much bigger you will have rubbing issues..

a 265/70R17 is 31.7'' tall and just under 11'' wide, it's essentially the same tire, with a bigger rim.

 

It will if the rim is big enough. like if u put a 18in rim on a stock tacoma with mud tires its gonna rub. unless u get a tire with a smaller sidewall. Theres one member on here w a stock red tacoma 1st gen who was able to put new rims and tires I think around this size toyo mts 285/75R16 and she said they only rubbed if she turned real sharp.

 

The diameter of the rim has nothing to with rubbing. The width of the rim and backspacing would affect rubbing. If you get the same tire size (width and height) as 265/75/16 you will have only minor rubbing.

It was recently purchased by my father 2 provinces over, and is being shipped to me next week. This is the reason I cannot tell whether there is any lift installed. I am assuming no, and it is stock.

I want NO rubbing. My buddy has a 05 tacoma with a 6" lift and his dick cepek mud countrys still rub on sharp turns, I don't want to deal with that.

It currently has 265/75/r16, which I understand is the stock setting.

Also, this truck probably won't see any offroading so mud tires are not a factor. I'm looking for best MPG, it will be a mainly highway vehicle.

nice truck. yea tht def looks like stock. If you want some decent tires look at firestone ats. Sound good on highway and if u ever have to go offroad they will def help. Doesnt really affect gas mileage either

 

The stock tire size is 265/70/16. 265/75/16 may have some rubbing. If you want 17s and no rubbing at all you want to get 265/65/17 tires.

Thanks man. Jus recently blacked most of it out. spray painted rims and everything plus a new tint.

 

With that size you should have no rubbing at all

One more question, is there certain rim offset and back spacing requirements? I don't know the stock rim offset or back space mesurements. (those are the stock rims right?)

Yeah those are the stock rims, I have those on my truck too . I'm not sure on the the offset/backspacing specs though...

I'm looking at rims on tirerack.com and ALL of the 17s recommend a 275/60-17 tire size. It's a little smaller according to the tire calculator.
