Or take the claw of the hammer.
I would be shocked if that thing is solid.

I just took a ball peen to it. I was a little timid before taking it to the dealer to be honest so I haven't gone back in with much more yet.

I have a question that I don’t see has been asked. If I had a 2011 that’s covered until 2023 and have already done things myself like fluid film or Eastwood Internal Frame coating or even welding patch panels on, would that void any frame replacement?

Also, it seems that good and bad experiences for frame replacements are mostly caused by the dealer where the work was performed. Is there a list of dealers showing where people had good or bad experiences? I’d go out of state if there was a dealer where multiple members had great frame replacements done.

I’m mostly saying this because isn’t it true that the dealer can seize a truck if it deems it unsafe? So it’s like you get one shot at this. Just a thought. I’m new so maybe I don’t really know what’s going on.

It won't void the frame replacement, since there is no possible way that they can argue that actively looking after it amounted to negligence that caused the problem. However, it might void the replacement in terms of causing the frame to not qualify for replacement, i.e., it has to rust through to qualify.

All they can do, is threaten to call the cops on you for driving an unsafe vehicle. Unless they can demonstrate that you owe them money, they have no right to actually seize your vehicle. If they try to pull the "unsafe vehicle" card, you would probably be best advised to hire a tow truck to drag it out of the dealer's sight. If they try to refuse to allow you to have the vehicle towed away from them, then YOU get to call the cops.

Thanks for the info. I’ve just heard people saying they got their truck seized, unsure if they really looked at their options.

as for the voiding frame replacement, I would hope you’re right. Actively trying to preserve the frame shouldn’t do anything to void it. But I can totally see Toyota (or any company) saying “We have not researched this internal frame coating and cannot attest to it’s possible benefits or possible acceleration in degradation.” Pretty much saying since you alter the frame we can’t say if this rust is caused by you or us. Again, all speculation. Disregard if I’m off my rocker.

Anyone heard anything more on this? Are they starting the inspections and spraying yet? Hope it’s coming this summer. Don’t know if I’ll buy another Tacoma since this problem keeps occurring and I live in a place with long salty winters. I see 2010+ Ford’s and Chevy’s with rusting out rear wheel wells or tailgates all the time. Guess I’ll have to decide if I want to trade mechanical reliability and rusted frames for bad mechanicals, rusted body’s and steeper value depreciation.

I bet if you look closer those frames don't fare much better.

I don't understand why so many people say they would not buy another Toyota because the rust issue.

Every vehicle you'll own in the rust belt states will eventually get rust. Unless you're actively managing the rust, it will get you, that's one of the challenge of living in these states.

Toyota is the only company I've heard of that has any rust abatement/frame replacement program. I'd like to have anyone else's experience to counter this statement.

So, for me, I'll do my due diligence regarding maintenance, and wait for the inevitable rust to take over in 5-10 years at which point I expect to get a new frame, and extended use to match the expected drivetrain lifespan.:transformer::burnrubber:

With Chevy, Ford, Dodge, you'll just be living with vehicle replacement after the rust gets you.:spending:

...but maybe that makes sense since those drivetrain duration already match the frames lifespan? :crapstorm::stirthepot:

Just scheduled an inspection for this. They said they will have my truck for 2 days. The lady I spoke with didn’t know anything about how/what was involved, but knew about it. The letter that I received today did say that you have until Feb 2022 to get this done and if it isn’t done, will NOT allow you to keep the frame replacement warranty in place.

Should I be worried that I haven't received a letter? I have never received a letter about a TSB or warranty extention. Supposedly there is one dealing with superwhite paint as well. Do you need the letter or can they just use your VIN?

Call a dealer and give them your VIN, they check it anyway even if you get a letter.

Truck: 2013 AC SR5. Limited winter exposure since new. only 28k over it's first 5 years. I've added 18,000 in the last 9 months., the last 2 months it's seen lots of salt as I added nearly 4k through Wisconsin and Minnesota. Sits just under 47k today.

I took it in a month ago for a frame inspection. Picked it up that evening and 'everything looks good!'. Ok Fine, not surprised. Never seen much winter. I'll just need to keep after it.

Monday my cell phone rings, it's that same dealership, there's a recall, just went active 2/1/20, and they'd like to have my truck for a day, loaner provided, to coat the interior frame rails and install plugs.

We've been buried under salt here (Central Indiana) again the last 24 hours because of a snow threat. Can't think of worse conditions to have to have this done in.

Before all of this, I've been anal about car washes, with underbody blasts, and just felt that I'd have to remain uber diligent with this truck, treat it like a 72 International Scout II (those of a certain vintage will know what that means)

So my truck goes in tomorrow morning. Came here to see what everyone's experience has been.

Hey, don't knock the intertrashionals! After I replaced the rockers and floor pans on her and spent an entire winter doing an engine swap, metal work, paint job, and new upholstery she was good as new! To quote my husband: "You know what would make this truck better.. a new truck" Just needed a bath and BFGs afterwards. SWEET. I'd never knock em. Love 'em. But damn, they never lasted in New England. In winter you could find one in a crowded parking lot just by listening for the sound of creeping rust...

I'll be here all week. Try the pot roast!

I don't drive it in the winter, that's the ancient Chinese secret up here in the Northeast. :D I've only ever seen two or three others on the road around here and they looked like they needed to be taken out behind the barn and shot. Shaaaaame

Having grown up there, I recall NOTHING lasting in New England! The sound of creeping rust was in EVERY parking lot.

That was about the size of it!

Very cool of you to lay this all out so thoroughly.

Indiana Truck. Just had the CRC done. Dropped it off at 7:30 am. Rec'd the 'good to go call' before 4 pm.

I've posted these pics elsewhere, when this is the thread they should be in. Apologies. Here's how it looked upon pick up.

    upload_2020-3-4_7-44-36.jpg

Also there was a recently replaced frame. the struggle is real, my friends.
