Preamble: want to build a RTT trailer utilizing a harbor freight 46x40 trailer ( )

I want the RTT as high as possible to use the trailer for cargo as well.

Anyone smarter than me that can provide some guidance in regards to the center of gravity to prevent rollover (tip over) when driving/turning?

    Many thanks in advance.

That's a pretty small and flimsy trailer to use as a base for an elevated RTT. I'm not saying it can't be done. You'd be within the listed capacity of the trailer and if you added some weight to the base, your center of gravity should be low enough not to tip. But I don't think you'd be happy with the trailer's performance. I'd look for a trailer made with heavier gauge steal, bigger tires/axle, and possibly a foot wider and 2 feet longer.

For what it's worth, a friend of mine has either that trailer or one slightly bigger from Hazard Fraught. They're not at all stiff. Only once we put his Honda VTX motorcycle on it and strapped it down did it seem to gain any rigidity.

Also, one of the fenders fell off. The mounts flexed and work hardened until it just snapped.

Other than that, they seem decent. Be prepared to spend some time shoring it up though.

If it were me, I'd find a used trailer on craigslist to start with. It'll be far sturdier. Also, a heavier, wider trailer will help with your COG situation.

Thanks for the comments. The biggest limitation I have is storage space for the trailer. I have a two car garage and 1 half occupied with the Mrs’ car. The other half with two motorcycles and all kinds of crap. Hence, this size trailer would somehow fit in the garage.

    But all abound points noted.

I wish I could recommend the Sylvansport Go as it seems to be a prepackaged deal that ticks all your boxes, (as it does mine) but at 10 grand I think they're extremely overpriced:

For a base trailer, Id consider an M416. Theyre heavy and stout enough to serve as your base, especially if you were to put smaller wheels on it and got it lower to the ground.

Thanks; there are some great built trailers out there yet price prohibited. The M416 is on option list.

Interested in this because we’ve been considering the same idea (although we only need enough space under the trailer for coolers etc).

Update: ended up buying a utility trailer from Lowe’s, it is a 3.5 feet (42 inch) x 5 feet (60 inch). It will fit in the garage once I rearrange and dispose of crap.

I’ll post pictures as the project starts and develop

Been wanting to make one out of the Lowe’s 3.5 x 5 trailer for a while. Can’t wait to see how you do yours.:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Long day. Millions thanks to my good friend and welder extraordinaire.
All I have left to do is paint, convert to 7 pin wiring, enclose the trailer, install house battery and test the tent.

This trailer came with a “lift up” gate. Because I’m enclosing it and will build doors, we decided to use the gate as a shelf for firewood, etc.

More to come in the near future.

Looks great man. How much was that utility trailer from Lowes? Might be a good winter project
