Leak near trans.

I dropped something under my truck the other day and while crawling under it to grab it I noticed what seems to be an leak of some sort.
When I wiped it with my finger it seemed to be oil. Fearing an oil leak I checked my oil and it seems to be normal. Nothing is pooling under my car but I can’t imagine this is normal. Apologize if this is normal and I’m just stupid hehe

Update.
Definitely still leaking and definitely oil.

 

Rear main seal bud. You gotta pull the trans off to replace that.

 

Possibly rear main oil seal.

 

thats what all research I’ve been doing is saying it probably is.... was really someone on here would say different.

 

How many miles on the motor? That's fairly uncommon though high mileage always winds up leaking like that. Seals only last for so long ya know.

 

Only 95k... Thats why I’m so confused all the cases I’ve seen have been 200k miles+. Going to take it to my mechanic this Wednesday.

 

It's a numbers game man, not every vehicle is created equal despite the same parts being used. I have 110K on my 2012 and I've been relatively lucky in that respect.

If you are 4x2 then it is a relatively easy job. If you are a 4x4 then I wish you the best of luck. Lol.

 

Its a 4x4. I’ve owned the truck for one month shy of two years and have had 0 problems with it. Guess I won’t know until I have it looked at.

hey are you running synthetic or conventional oil. Reading some other forums about how some synthetic oils may actually cause the seal to leak....
Got an appointment with my mechanic tomorrow to start the process of fixing it. #ripmywallet

 

Old wives tale of old ass synthetics when they first came out. Current gen syn's wont cause shit to leak.

Honestly. With a leak that minimal, i wouldnt worry about it too much. Id re-torque oil pan and trans pan bolts and just keep an eye on it.

 

Try running a synthetic "high mileage" oil if you already aren't, supposed to have additives that help swell up old seals to prevent leaks. If it's small enough it might help for awhile.

 

Good to know didn’t really think it made a whole lotta sense that a synthetic would cause that.
The leak doesn’t pool underneath my car so I’ll probably end up just watching it and dealing with it at a later date. Still gonna take it to my mechanic and make sure there’s nothing underlying.

My 04 doesn't have high mileage (84k) but I've been running the high mileage synthetic oil regardless just because of the age of my seals, since seals wear out with age just as they do with mileage. Haven't had any oil leaks at all which is pretty good for a 15 year old vehicle, for what it's worth.

 

I have been running Dino oil since I bought it. Even now supercharged I run standard 5-30. Nothing special here. I have never heard of synthetic oil causing a seal to leak honestly, but I guess anything is possible!

 

Only time I've heard of leaks coming from oil types used is when someone goes from using a high mileage blend oil (with additives to swell up seals) to using an oil without those additives...apparently that can cause the seals to leak if they've been accustomed to the additives for so long.

But yeah I've never heard of dino oil itself lending to leaks

 

Oh yeah that's right huh. I forgot high mileage blends exist.

I mean honestly if dino oil is causing leaks or starting to cause seals to leak than the seals themselves should be addressed, not the type of detergents and additives in the oil. That's just the way I always saw it.

 

Yeah I think personally the high mileage oil should be used as a preventative measure against leaks, not as a solution to a leak that's already presented itself...but in the OPs case if he's hoping to buy a little time before tackling that job it might help give him some. Not sure though
