People don't care if they see anyone. Same thing happened to my uncle at a gold course, had to use his insurance since the cats were like 1300.
    People these days.

that sucks. Why isnt there a serial number stamped into the cats that can then be checked by the scrap yards?

That's insane. I would figure that to be a pretty safe place. Any chance of checking local places who would buy these things. I bet the thiefs stay local....

I am somewhat relieved as I thought someone had stolen like a meow meow cat from your truck, when I saw the post title. I was left wondering why you had a cat in your truck, and who the hell would take it...

Thats going on around the whole nation. I am not sure when it became cool to rob parts off of cars to scrap. I understand the I want your wheels shit (not that doing that is better) but at least they were taking it b/c they liked it. They steel now for the sole purpose of scrapping it. I hate theifs and hope these fellas get caught with their hand up the wrong undercarrige! (I hope it's mine, I got sumthin for ya!!! HAHA! Get Some, I'm Rick James! Unity! Slap. JOE>

Its been about two years ago, there was a guy riding around in a 1 ton truck with the tool box sides, standard looking service truck. He even went as far as to have some magnetic signs made up with a fake garage name on it with a phone number that went to a real sevice garage.
He was caught at our local mall riding around cutting cats off vehicles in the daylight. People that seen him was interviewed on the news and most people thought someone had car trouble and was getting service done.
When they arrested him he had over 75 catalityc converters in his truck.

I forgot to add, they started requiring all scrap yards to record what is being scrapped, photo copy driver license, and they must have a verifiable address and phone number. These yards get audited quarterly. when this law went into affect all metal thefts, cats, air conditioning units, electrical wire, etc. was dropped by 90%. I have not heard of a Cat getting stolen in over a year.

Good in theory, but it fails in execution. While some scrappers question the source of the metals, the majority don't. There is no regulation for this and even if there was, I believe it would be extremely difficult to police all of them. The sad thing is, the metals in the cats usually only fetch 35-50 bucks. For us victims, what a Rate of Return

What's sad is they don't do shit if they catch the guy. Probably spends a night in jail and sent on the way in the morning.

Houston has an ordinance that requires all scrap yards to get a picture of the seller, a picture of the seller's truck, a picture of what the seller is selling, a l/p number and of course the sellers name and ID number. The ordinance has pushed the criminals to sell their stolen scrap outside of the city.

Houston has also joined cities across the country in using a national database called LeadsOnline. Story here: http://www.leadsonline.com/main/news/htm/view.aspx?id=219 Story focuses on pawn shops, but same goes for scrap yards.
