Anyone install a l track system on the floor of a first gen Tacoma? I'm wondering if it will fit between the bed rails and flush with them. I have a bed cover on, so I can't take any measurements.

Not a 1st gen but I really like how @Crom set up his bed with L-Track.

I wonder this too. My Nissan has the utilitrac system in it and it is addictively useful. I should get some dimensions the next time they're in the same state.

My biggest concern with installing a track would be backing it with something. Easy on the floor and front, complicated on the sides.

    rivnuts

4 or 5 rivnuts should be more than strong enough. I wouldn't hold motorcycles in with it, but I used rivnuts to hold my hi-lift in place with some custom brackets, and that thing isn't going anywhere.

That said, I just used a few sets of stainless D rings. I cut up some 1/8" steel as backing plate. Not bad for $20.

Haha. Motorcycle is exactly what I had in mind. I think I could easy put rails on the floor and front with proper backing plates and it would probably hold a bike.

But rivnuts is a good idea for the lighter stuff though

I see we have similar ideas on mountain bike mounts.

My friend has a 2nd gen 5 lug with the adjustable racks on the side. They've never left our dirtbikes on the side of the road, but I see them bend when I pull tension on the straps and I prefer my 1st gen's cargo hooks in the corners.

For motorcycles, just use the factory cargo hooks, IMO don't even try using rack systems.

Use stainless rivnuts if you go that route. They aren't that expensive. I think I got a pack of 100+ of various sizes for like $30.

Yeah, that bike rack is pretty old and (obviously) well used. It's actually the 2nd truck it's been on. I used to have a 97 5 lug extracab I originally made it for. The cargo hooks on the long bed are in the corner, so I had rivnuts holding the entire thing it. When I got this truck in 2005, I was able to reuse most of it, and mount it using the cargo hooks, then a couple riv nuts with spacers in the center and a piece of aluminum L-bracket in the back to keep that 1/8" (I think?) aluminum plate from flopping around. The space in between the two bike racks works to hold my motorcycle tires in place, too.

Yeah. If the rack systems were nice and strong from the factory they might be ok for a moto. But something I do at home.... probably not. Unless I'm just building a whole new bed.

Just added stainless rivnuts to the Amazon wish list. Thanks.
