Anybody switch out plain steel rims/winter tires for the snowy months without TPMS installed?

If so, does the lack of functioning TPMS system affect other systems at all?

Im thinking of getting steel rims and winter tires while foregoing extra TPMS sensors.

    Thanks

Doesn't do anything except make the light in your dash stay on. Ghetto mode includes but is not limited to tape, pulling the bulb, and leaving your summer tires in the bed for extra weight.

It's an innocuous little Amber light. The same color light that goes on to tell me there is a passenger with his fat ass on the seat next to me. If the state doesn't mandate for inspection, or your inspection time comes with the summer tires on, you get use to it. I did For the 11 years in my previous cars and will do for the newer ones now.

There are so many dash lights on cars today, mine makes me feel comfy in the winter. When the TPMS senders died in the summer tires, they stayed on all of time. It's fine.

This is the first year i though about getting snows for my truck, always just put up with all seasons through the winter.

However, on my wifes civic, we mount and dismount snow tires every winter off the factory rims. We have had 3 tpms failures which were probably a result of damage during these mounts.

If you are going to get winter tires look at it as an opportunity to get nice summer rims with TPMS and use the stock rims with TPMS as winter rims.

    I've done this in both my 2006 & 2013 w/ no problems.
My light doesn't always trigger, only out of range of the set w/ sensors stored in garage.
I can go to work, park all day, go home not have light.
When I drive out of town to my winter rental, the light triggers.
Once back home, it resets on its own overnight.
That has been my experience since 2006 with these sensors.

I have been doing that for years...no big deal, just a small amber light.

You're reading my mail. It's much more important to have the safety of convenient winter tires then worry about a light that doesn't go off.

The only thing is, though steel looks like crap, if you have much salt, you are better off with rusty looking steel rims for winter that can take abuse then alloys that will corrode also and leak air and loose strength. Alloys still corrode in salt conditions.

I have actually never bought rims, but would probably go with some black steel cheapies. Ill be running stock 265 70 16, other than the rim size and number of lugs are there any specs to worry about?

Any auto parts store can set you up with the correct rim. To say it is a common rim is an understatement. The steel rims I use came off a previous gen Tundra, used 11 years on my 4Runner and are now my winter rims for a 2015 Taco. They were originally used on the chariot for Ben Hur.

So when you put your summer tires back on, do the TPMS need any special servicing or just a straight switch works?

yup, it clears after a few minutes.

With the 16+ the TPMS light stays off until about 30 minutes of driving, I rarely saw my light on when I ran my steelies.

Last time I checked here we use a shit ton of salt..... Some time unnecessarily. I have not had any problems with my factory rims corroding or leaking in the 9 years of use, the last 3 years of winter use only. If your dead set on running steelies in the winter I am pretty sure you can get TPMS that work with steelies as well. There is no need these days for the black electrical tape mod anymore .

Another set of sensors will cost you $50-$60 and any tire store will install them free when they mount tires.

I have done that the last 2 winters and no problems. My TPMS light will come on after awhile but that has been it. I run aluminum wheels from April until Thanksgiving. I put the steel ones back on for the winter with no TPMS.

Black electrical tape over TPMS light?
I was driving 20 miles to work and the light would only start flashing the last couple miles. Didnt even pay any attention to it after a couple days.
Come spring your gonna have to clean the sticky stuff on the clear plastic. Hope it doesnt scratch when you are rubbing it off.

    I thought the same thing.
After awhile it’s just another light on the dash.
