I've been working on setting up my home office, mainly in mid century modern style. I got my desk and extra monitor/TV in a few days ago. I have a Zenith console stereo coming (my parents), but needed a cabinet to house electronic stuff I don't want to see; AVR receiver, Playstation, router, switch, PC, UPS...

The cabinet next to the desk in the first picture turned out to be too small so I've been watching Craigslist. This GE console came up advertised as non working and the guy was parting it out. I figured I could repurpose the cabinet to hold my electronics, so I checked it out today and ended up buying it.

When I opened up the back everything looked original and unmolested. I got out my multimeter and started tracing voltage from the plug on, seeing if I could find why it wouldn't turn on. Then I remembered why I bought it and realized all the guts were going to have to come out. Have to say I'm somewhat conflicted as it's in such good shape.

We had one of those stereos when I was growing up. I loved the smell of it when it warmed up - wood, Pledge, and that ozone smell of the tubes. Records on that thing always sounded sooooo good.

It's hard to beat the warmth of music played with tubes. This is the same one I'm getting from my parents. They've had it since my Dad got it for my Mom as a wedding present. I remember playing with it as a kid. I believe it's a mix of tubes and solid state but won't kniw until I open the back. This one will not be repurposed.

They need to pull a hostile takeover of the girl scouts (since girls are allowed in scouting now - a move I agree with) since they want to be scouts there is only one scouting organization. Solves that.

They (the boys AND girls) then sell the cookies.

Can you imagine the $$ they'd have for camp outs and excursions with that cookie money?

"Where are we camping this weekend, Scoutmaster Larry?"

    "CAESAR'S PALACE, BILLY!!"

The GS program is severely lacking. They have the gold star but that’s it. Once earned you’re done. Nothing left but volunteer leadership roles. Eagles get scholarships and more. We’ve had the girls in the BSA Venture Scout program for a long time. And sisters have always been at the meetings and camp outs, now they just get credit for it. I think it’s regrettable that the LDS officially withdrew from the program as allot of youth lost access to some great resources due to their families following suit. Meanwhile the kids in my sons Webelos den are having a great time and the three girls that are Webelos are just as driven to grow and participate.

It's the GS fault they never created or pressed for a leadership program that provided the value and congressional benefits as Eagle Scout. I don't think there's another youth program out there (not even JROTC) that has a similar award designation. My hope is that the GS see the writing on the wall and propose a wholesale merger (if not folding up under entirely).

So far their reaction is to sue the BSA over the use of the word “scouts”.
