My insurance agent mentions this to me twice a year, about how much money it can save me. I keep telling him to pound salt. Told him my privacy is more important that a few bucks, and that if his rates get too high, I’ll just start shopping. So far, no issues. I don’t expect that to last.

Think of it this way..... it's like getting "likes" from your truck. A way to rate your driving behavior. If you rag the hell out of it you'll be turned in to the automotive brown shirts. Yeah, sounds pretty ridiculous, but it's going to be how the world works before long. It's already reality in China. They will ban you from traveling if you have low social media "scores".... Embrace distopia.

Sounds like this “feature” was driven from the Japanese Domestic Market. Over there this would not be viewed as an intrusion, more of how well you are participating in society. Paying less for insurance being a good driver is not a bad thing but the privacy issues are huge.

    It still feels like 1984.

So, is this optional for 2020 models or are buyers stuck with it?

dang, my 2017 keeps getting jucier. I really can't see a reason why anyone would want this feature. At best its an invasion of privacy, at worst its gathering evidence against you.

It’s not a good feeling, going to go to dealership today to try and get more info. I’m going to put this on their radar I can tell you that much.

Almost all vehicles have this now..
My Colorado breaks it down even farther.
Hard breaking, hard acceleration, night driving, distance you drive, average speed etc.
    My score is 57.

They can send the score to your insurance agent to save you money.

I would be in trouble with mine.

At some point this will be compulsory for the insurance companies to be able to pull your data. I know it’s way of the world at this point, would have still bought truck—but they should provide me a break down on how this data is used, protected and also when or if they’ve been forced to share.

Since the first time I became aware of that feature, I’ve been wondering how long before it becomes mandatory. Pretty sure at some point they’ll refuse to cover you without it.

My girlfriend will fail this . All she needs is a on off switch for the gas and brakes , she has her foot jammed on one of them all the time .

    Agreed.

I think its unreasonable to expect to not have a random hard braking here and there in major cities. I'll be driving along minding my business with the flow of traffic when brake lights pop up and cars dart off onto the shoulder. Incoming hard braking for some unknown reason. Its basically chain reaction of people not paying attention culminating in like 10 people slamming the brakes at once. My braking isn't that hard because I see this coming, but who knows how it will show up on a sensor for screwing me out of money.

I do know the All State or Esurance (practically same thing) has a phone app. It detects when it thinks you drove and asks if you just drove when you stop. If your drive was spirited, just say no, I was a passenger.

People laugh at the Big Brother “Crazy Conspiracy Theorist” types but when you see the BS taking place today vs. even a decade or so ago, you have to wonder who really are the crazy ones?
