So im going to California and gonna have Sound Man Audio install my new 3g iPad in the dash of my tacoma.

Anyone on here done this mod yet? I know there is the video floating around but I wanted to hear from someone who had it done themselves.

If you had this done please give me some pro's and cons of having it.

Just curious as to what im getting myself into.

    Thanks TW!

Why are you doing it? What is the benefit? Will it be hooked up to the car speakers?

So I was going to do this myself, as I have a mac mini running in my audi s4, but as a "insider" for a certain comapny I also know that they are planning on releasing a smaller version of the ipad between jan 11 and june 11. I am going to hold out for that so I can then do this mod in place of the current stereo. The best part is if you mod the ipad to run an application called plex you basically have a full blown 100K home theater / stereo / dj system in your truck!! and if you run it right you can be totally wireless!!

Thought about it, but as someone who goes far off the beaten path on a regular basis the Ipad makes no sense to me since it is tethered to 3g. My GF's Iphone doesn't get signal in most mountain areas so there is really no point. If I were mall crawling I would be all over it though.

Personally I have changed my plans to using my old laptop as a carputer via Garmin MobilePC ($100) and a touch-screen (~150). I would still have wireless abilities, and since my nav would be running off satellites instead of cell towers I won't be SOL every weekend.

I like the concept, but I'm gonna wait for a solid Android alternative. I believe I'll be much happier going that direction. I just can't get over the lack of memory card slot or USB on the iPad. I think that's a HORRIBLE oversight. I'm sure they considered it prior to production but eliminated the idea due to some logistical problem. I believe they should have held off until they got that addressed. Makes no sense to me.

Also, I think I will look into a slightly smaller and W/S aspect ratio. I don't know a whole lot about car stereos and how it would all cone together, but I think I would prefer it to fit a little better and be about the size of the stock stereo, top to bottom. I wonder if there will ever be a way to USB an external CD/DVD drive to an Android Tablet. That would be end-game for me.

I offroad like crazy....live in the mountains in Colorado. Never use a navigation system, i prefer good ole paper.

I use wilderness and BLM maps.

The two draw backs to the Ipad i have seen is one, no cd drive (not that big of a deal in this new age), and two, in order to have Sirius play everywhere, I would have to purchase an external Sirius drive for my car.

Overall those two problems are not really big deals.

What do you guys think? Still debating......

Why would you wait for the smaller version? The current size Ipad fits perfetly?

I say that you keep your stock head unit, and make a sweet ass Ipad mount. Then you could remove it and take it anywhere, but then you'll still have your cd drive and everything else. An ipad is made for an all around media experience in a mobile format, it would be a shame to pay for internet service and an ipad, just to keep it in the truck. Not to mention that it would scream steal me.

I know I know. It sounds crazy. But, I think it looks sorta silly near the top. Looks way too tall, TO ME. I think chopping it down in height (leaving the existing width) would be perfect. Most of the new Androids coming out have a wider aspect ratio (i.e. Samsung's Galaxy Tab, Archos Tabs, etc...). I know, you probably think I'm crazy. I'm an android freak and just love the ever-expanding possibilities. They never cease to get better every day.

As far GPS goes, there are numerous Android Apps you can *purchase* that will allow you to store maps on the device and use the GPS to overlay, thereby eliminating the need for 3G signal to download maps continuously. These are for the phones and not all the tabs are going to come with GPSs unfortunately, but I see a possibility of the starts aligning ;)

Anyway, these are probably just pipe dreams for me, as this would require a great deal of ingenuity and persistence (not to mention money). Though I believe I may posses the former, the later posses some difficulty when stacked against my predilection toward settling for the status quo.

    You're probably right. lol

As I said in the first thread that showed the video, this is probably all a bit ridiculous. But it's still fun to toy with the idea. :D

The video I saw with one installed it seems real out of place in the dash to me. I don't have the need for all of that in my dash. Then again, I wouldn't want an ipad regardless of where it is haha.

Im still deciding what to do.

AND THE IPAD COMES OUT OF THE DASH IN 2 SECONDS, SO NO STEALING PROBLEM.

But like i said im looking for reviews on if it works well with a system and all that. Honestly its a cheaper way to have a better touch screen in my car than ANY other touch screen out there

Lol, that reminds me of detaching my face-plate to my old stereo back in college (I've had stock stereos for the past 5 years). Just thinking of trying to tuck that into my pocket or something makes me laugh. However, it's a good point. Just like linking your iPod (or whatever iDevice) to your normal stereo, but no 'middleman' to work through. Even detaching it and sliding it under the seat is gonna keep 99% of people from even thinking to look. It would look more like you dismantled your stereo and there was nothing available to steal.
