I have a 2005 TRD sport with the V6 and automatic transmission. 174k miles.

    Short back story.

A few years ago the shifter started feeling "sticky", it took a while for the gears to engage after changing. Narrowed down to the neutral safety switch. I didn't change it out at the time, I just cleaned it and gave it a few loves taps with a hammer. It's worked fine since then, up until a few weeks ago.

Upon trying to start my truck recently, I notice that my truck won't start in park anymore, I have to shift into neutral to start it. No big deal. I do see a pending code from my scanner p0705 PRDNL indicator. I knew it was the neutral switch again, but this time I was going to change it out.

So I get the new part, knowing about what I'm getting into. First of all I couldn't even get the plug/connector off of the damn thing, so I put it off until after I got the switch off. Getting the switch off took a couple of hours, but I eventually got it. Afterwards I'm still trying to get the plug off of it, I manage to rip a couple of wires out on accident, wires 5 and 9. I tried to shove them back in but I didn't think it was going to work.

I put the new switch in and get it lined up properly. Now park isn't lighting up, neutral is not lighting up, and a couple others not lighting up either. Truck won't start no matter where I have the gear selector. Decided I screwed up the connector while taking it off, so I ordered a new (used) one.

The plug arrived today. Took me a while to get everything connected because of the tight space up in the transmission, but I made it work. I plug back in the battery, get in the cab and just turn the key to see if the "P" is lighting up, and it is! I was so excited, I had thought for sure I had it taken care of. I shifted through all of the gears to make sure they work, and sure as hell they all do.

The truck still won't start. Not in neutral, not in park.

I even tried plugging back in the old switch to see in "P" would light up and it does, but it still doesn't even want to crank. Battery voltage tested ok at about 12.5 volts. I tried to bypass the starter relay but I'm unsure if I made contact with the right pins (I tried jumpering the Output and the Battery +). I still have a pending p0705 code.

I do notice a buzzing coming from around the transmission area when the key is in the ON position. Not quite sure what it is, it's not the switch though, I unplugged it and it still made the noise.

I'm unsure of where to go from here. Any help would be appreciated.

Here's the schematic. Even though it looks like a complex circuit, here is how it works. The ignition switch has 2 starter output terminals. 1 of them supplies power through the neutral safety switch, to the starter relay coil. The other output supplies power to the relay contact terminal. With the relay energized, power is sent to the starter.

I would check the STA Fuse 7.5 Amp. You may have blown it when ripping the wires out.

I did check the fuse, swapped it with another. No go.

Am I correct in assuming that the starter is not turning at all when you try to start the engine?

Is the start relay activating when you try and start the engine? You will need someone to check the relay when starting, they should be able to hear or feel it click.

Check these high current fuses under the hood. Check the fuses with a meter visual isn't a good way to check.

    AM2 Fuse 30 Amp

I did look at it quickly this morning, went through the gears again and noticed that 2L wasn't lighting up. I have the feeling I may have crossed it with a neutral line. Something else to look at.

    Partially good update.

I knew I messed up the old connector. Didn't realize a pin got stuck in the connector. When I pressed the old connector into the new switch, it bent the neutral pin down.

Hopefully I can bend it back into place with damaging it.

Edit, bending the pin back was a success. It lives again!
