How much would you have received back from returning the core if done on time?

$200 is a pretty reasonable price - quick search on RockAuto shows these going up to $360 after core.

That would definitely not be a rebuild. The boot should have no fluid in it, only if the seals fail then the boot fills with PS fluid and will leak.
This typically happens from a torn inner tie rod boot that lets in dirt which will ruin the seal. A worse case would be internal wear and metal particles destroying the seals. In that case a rebuild is typically not cost effective.
The FSM has a detailed rebuild procedure. Much more than just new tie rod boots and bushings.

MK5, on the side of the box are there any part numbers printed on the box?

Sorry, I guess I had notifications turned off!

I think it was $200. $433 total price before shipping and tax.

New boots, bushings, and inner TR ends. But they also opened it up and replaced the seals, which were leaking. Symptoms were exactly as hx989 said, dripping fluid from the boots due to failed seals. This truck sees a lot of dust, and there was a hard-to-see gash in one of the boots.

FYI everyone: When I replaced my rack, I also flushed fresh fluid through the pump (turning it by hand) and all the lines, and added a Magnefine 3/8" filter in the return line. It seems like a cheap way to get longer life from your steering system!

This is a generic box that they gave me with the rebuild, not the original one.

mk5 from what i understand, there are two different racks for our tacomas, one for the trd and one for the regular truck. that's why i was asking for the number. more than likely on the box it's not a a1 cardone number, rebuilders in this area still use ATSCO numbers.

Regarding a question asked about the PS fluid filter that I recommended:

It is a 3/8" Magnefine filter that I purchased from a popular online retailer that's named after a major rain forest and river system.
I installed it in the PS fluid return line, by cutting several inches out of the return line. I secured it with a steel bracket as shown below:

    filter.jpg

The green arrow indicates the filter itself. The red arrow indicates the bracket that I made. I later added a notch to my bracket, and a large hose clamp around it and the filter assembly. Finally, I painted the bracket to prevent rust.
