@lynyrd3 What is wrong? It looks short to me, and the bigger pieces burn longer.
I always hate it when the wood is split really small, it burns up too fast.

Hardwoods, last year 200, this year 240.

Well he said that they wouldn't fit. Some of those pieces definitely look big enough that they wouldn't fit through the door on a smaller Jotul or similar. :notsure:

Paid $350 delivered 2.5 chords split wet hardwood Tandem long bed dumper. Another load is on the way. I have plenty of seasoned for this winter already. A local tree service runs out of storage space after storms and charges for splitting and delivery rather than pay a dump tip fee.Now thats what I call a WIN WIN.

Maybe I'm showing my age, but when I think 'Old Vermont Castings' I think of the pre-cat units, with the small pre-airwash sooty glass, or just plain cast iron doors with no glass at all

    Uh, wood?

LOL That was what we had here when we moved in. It had the cat but the design was from earlier generations. The previous owners had run coal in it and warped the entire innards of the poor thing. I got the grinder out and trimmed here and there, then stuffed up the rest of the holes with gasket material. We ran that way for about 15 years. Now we have a Jotul 500 which I absolutely love because I can throw big long stuff right on in there. No more trimming the ends off to make it fit.

yea I don’t know exactly how old this is, but I think it’s about 30 years old. Obviously compared to some stoves that’s still very new lol

That perception stems from my childhood. My dad bought a Vermont Castings Defiant brand-new in the late 70's when he was building the house, and they're still heating with it today. He basically designed the house around a woodstove, so it was the only heat source we had until I was probably 10 or 12-ish. So when I think 'Vermont Castings' I think 'big, black, cast iron.'
I keep telling him that a new stove will give them more heat from less firewood, but he just shrugs and says "this one's paid for"
Since they've got 100+ acres of mostly trees, I can't fault his logic yet. But in another decade when I'm cutting their firewood for them I may change my mind

How much are the stoves that you recommend? $2,000+?
    I consider it, too.

We have a pre 88 Vermont Castings, Consolidated Dutchwest, Federal Airtight FA288CCL. A big catalytic combuster stove. If I can reduce wood an keep heat that might be worth it.
