I was looking at the regular cab Tundra today (coming out October) and noticed that they are putting the Dual VVT-i engine in the 2011's. The thing is, it gets worse gas mileage and has a lower towing capacity than a Tacoma. What is the upside of choosing the Tundra in this situation? When they update the Tacoma's (supposedly) with the new engine will it effect the towing capacity the same way?

It looks like the payload is slightly higher. Bigger bed to put stuff in.

I would guess just having a full sized truck, more bed room for bulky items, not necessarily heavier items. I don't know why the maximum towing capacity is so low on the Tundra though, maybe max for that engine?

If I needed the bigger bed and heavier payload I'd buy the Tundra. I don't so I bought the Tacoma.

The 2010 Tundra actually had a higher towing capacity (5200 lbs) before they updated the engine. I don't think they made any major changes that would effect the weight of it between 2010-11. :notsure:

Yes, but I would guess it tows that max load alot better than the Taco with all the extra weight. Does it have the 6 speed tranny?????? I'm tempted to go check this out on their site.

I would be happy with the towing and power of a Tundra in a Tacoma. I dont need the extra size and the Tacoma looks much better. It wasn't until recently when I bought a bigger boat (~6k) that I've even considered a Tundra. Still the Tacoma gets the jobs done.

Actually, I belive this is the first year that ALL manufacturers have to follow this new standard for towing and payload. I'm not really familiar with it, but from what I've heard, ALL truck makers will see a loss in payload and towing capabilities.

By the way, I'm a new Tundra owner, but former Tacoma owner. I traded in my 03 Taco for my Tundra. I wouldn't even consider the V6 Tundra if your thinking about getting one. I got the new 4.6L V8 in my Tundra and wished I'd gone with the 5.7L. I still love the truck don't get me wrong, but they should get rid of that 4.0L and put the 4.6L in the Tacoma!
