Does my smart phone data get sent to Toyota? I think you're missing the point here.

The question is when will Toyota use telematics to deny a warranty, not whether google is harvesting data from my cell phone.

They're two different companies. It seems a little irrelevant.

How do you think that data gets transmitted to Toyota? This isn't a Tesla with a built-in connection to corporate.

Where does it say that your cellphone is being used to record and transmit this data? And afaik, yes, your Tacoma does have its own connectivity abilities, this is why you get GPS, weather, updates, etc without your phone connected.

That is exactly what I said. The Taco records the data and then it is transmitted over your own phone. If you don't want data transmitted, I suppose you just don't use the Entune app (TANSTAAFL).

I'm still not seeing where it says your phone is transmitting the data in the pictures your posted. all it says is:

Agreed. Plus, we don't know what their definitions of each input are. For me, my idea of "normal" acceleration is hitting about 3-3.5k RPM before shifting. You ask my grandmother and that's like hitting warped speed...idle is more her style. Hard cornering is subjective too and if the system uses a gyro, that calibration could be very poor. Granted it's old, but my 4Runner Traction Control beeper goes off even at low speed and curves because the gyro is off.

Imagine taking a test where you don't even know what the subject is, let alone the grading parameters. Sound more relateable?

I'd be curious to look at the FCC certification for various pieces of the truck. If something has a cellular radio in it, it should show up there.

Its far more likely to me that its using your phones data connection, for now.

Maybe thinking too far in, but this just came to mind...

Anyone notice the 2020's no longer have a 3.5 mm (headphone) jack for audio? All the flip up has is USB. This means there HAS to be a data connection between your phone and head unit whether through USB or Bluetooth, no more analogue through 3.5 mm. This could be the missing link in order to connect the info to Toyota. Don't want your data transmitted? Listen to FM or get an XM subscription...Thoughts?

Of course, I say that it seems more likely that they use your phone, but I'm literally working on a cellular connected pond depth gauge right now. The technology is absolutely there, its cheap, and its only a matter of politics and corporate slowness that could be keeping it out of a vehicle.

I have run into A LOT of willful ignorance lately. It is my new favorite diagnosis. A couple floors above passive aggressive, but not all the way to the party.

My Indian Springfield records everything but they don’t know about it until you bring the bike in for services and they download off the ECU.

I suspect the truck is different in that it needs the phone to do it. Yes you have gps, and satellite radio, weather, etc, but those are all passive systems designed to receive. I would be very surprised to learn that the truck is transmitting info on its own.

Interesting. Another good reason to make my 2nd gen last forever.. :boink:

Does anyone know how the data from the VDR (not the event recorder) is actually transmitted to Toyota? The only thing it says there is 'vehicle may transmit data without notification to you'. Does it have to be plugged in at a dealer, or does it have the ability to use wifi and/or cell networks? That would freak me out.. Not like Im a tin foil hat guy, but still..

I agree, for now. Tesla already is doing this via cell phone data link, various companies have had wifi access points built into their vehicles for years. It wouldn't surprise me in the least that Toyota might go that route, but whether it is now, or yet to come, I don't know.

I’m no mechanical engineer or expert at electronics but it would seem to me that the most viable way would be through your phone every time you connect.

The data in the upper pic would be through your phone. The event recorder is through TechStream. Event recorders have been in many cars since the early-2000s.
