Typically, if Cali does it WA does it and sometimes more:
    https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy...us-a-monthly-fee-for-a-digital-license-plate/

There were local articles, but that one pretty much captures it.

I watched a couple videos about folks who tried to stay off the grid and how much work it is these days. I closed by FB account just a couple days before the Cambridge Analytica story broke. I had a good, worried laugh about that.

In the end, until we consent to communication devices in our bodies, I'm sort of okay where we are at. Still, I would like my data to be used for good, but I know that is not realistic.

I do agree. There is a certain appeal to it, but any serious thought has me thinking that just tending and gathering all my own food would be more of an effort than staying off the grid. Doing it in a group would be easier but could easily defeat the purpose.

It’s more nefarious than that. The government has ways and it’s not for advertising. If people only knew. Actually I take that back, even if they knew they wouldn’t do shit cause they’re too busy taking selfies and posting on Farcebook... This is society today. We’re all being dragged towards the falls by the current but most are blissfully unaware.

The Cambridge analytica thing was nefarious. But in the end, it really depends on the ability of the person on the end to think for themselves.

I've thought about it a lot. I live the way I do because of my family. If I was a single man with no one else to worry about I’d spend the rest of my life in a very different, much simpler manner.

You're in law enforcement, right? I was caught off guard by the license plate readers, then sort of got comfortable thinking they would stay on cruisers for actual crimes and such. Then, I heard that Cali is parking them off the side of the road gathering data and some agencies around here have Parking Enforcement vehicles solely equipped with plate readers on all four corners. That is getting out of hand.

Very true. It is not hard to realize and see what is going on. But then, willful ignorance.

Oof. Yeah. I've got a whole bag of nope to put those license plates in.

I still have a facebook account, that i've been feeding junk data for years, then deleted everything on it, and finally deactivated. I need to convince a bunch of people to switch messaging apps before I can fully get rid of it. Other than that I just hope that I'm boring enough not to draw attention. Google is easy enough to replace. But Amazon is such a time saver that I'm going to have a hard time getting rid of it.

That’s something I can’t really get into too much, but I will say you read my mind.

Yes and no. My only parking ticket was back in 2005 or 2006. It was because of one of the electronic meters. They alert enforcement as soon as one expires. I was a couple minutes over and there was already a ticket on my car. The plate readers go deeper than that and I would be surprised if they aren't monetarily backed by big data collection. There's just too much to be learned.

Yeah. The shame is that it worked.

Both Google and Amazon are weaknesses for me. For now, the benefits outweigh the negatives by a lot.

Same here. But as a habitual line-stepper, I prefer intimate and honest face time with an actual person who is going to ding me for 175 bucks. It’s give and take, not just take. Come and take my money, don’t send me a damn bill. Give me that warm “you know damn well you weren’t supposed to park there” smile.

That is certainly true in my case. I am always thinking about the pros and cons. The problem, like you said, is family. It usually takes me a solid two years to shift the paradigms at home. Cutting the cord was a huge win and no one misses cable so far, except when the Seahawks broadcast gets buggy. I think I got a handle on that now.
