I do miss the very old days when a nice convo could get one torn up. Now, being logged before they're placed, no such luck. This is a big part of the reason that we either stay out of the cities, find true free parking, or use a damn parking garage.

I get that and feel the same way. Especially those traffic cameras at stoplights. But what I’m talking about is actual real time tracking/surveillance systems that can tell big brother where you are at any given time. That is terrifying to me. If the British had had that during the revolutionary war, we wouldn’t be here.

Are we at that point? I still feel like I have a Jason Bourne switch and can disappear if I really wanted to. It’s more difficult now, but I feel like I could do it. I could be delusional though.

Now, you are starting to tip toe into another interesting conversation. I was in this one a couple weeks back with a very mixed group. It went better than I would have thought with most of the same conclusions.

Sorry, but I am not willing to fill in more than that as it will turn this thing straight to hell in three posts. :D

Back in the day it was so simple. You could just take a bus to the next state and work at diner and you would have successfully “disappeared”. Crazy.

Tow truck drivers have had plate scanners for a few years now. Ever see the tow trucks circling the mall and bar parking lots? Mostly they're cruising for an easy parking violation, but if they're partnered with the right financial institution those scanners will let them know who is more than 90 days late on their loan. Your shit could be repo'd while you're getting your snack on at the cinnabun.

Oof. It is a thought problem like how to commit a perfect crime. I just can't see it if I was single and tried to start from where I am at now. Just try to disappear.

IMHO these days, the best solution that I can come up with is just stay under the radar. But even this thread could set off some flashing red lights in some places.

Well, basically what it all comes down to is who looking and for what purpose?

This thing we’re talking about is a corporate thing trying to increase profit margins even more. But the rest (the technology) goes beyond that, and all are intertwined. Do we really control our government. or does our government control us? And if so, when you look at the people involved in running government regardless of party, if you aren’t scared of that prospect, you are basically brain dead anyway.

Some people think, “I’m not doing anything wrong so what do I care?” Then all of sudden the government deems something you’ve been doing all along to be wrong. What then? Then you stop doing whatever it is, until the next time they take something else you’ve been taking for granted was yours? That’s how dystopian societies work. And that is a terrifying thing to me.

in the mean time I just keep swimming along with all the other goldfish in the bowl because what else can I do? What can any of us do?

Honestly, low level folks could totally still disappear relatively successfully. High profile people far less so.

You work at a diner and have a $500 car paid for in cash? Go find a greasy spoon diner in a different state or take up a day laborer job since I doubt most are keeping W2 / tax records, keep the car, swipe a paper plate from the local used car lot and that'll buy you some time on missing plates. You aren't gonna have a retirement plan to fall back on, but if you're running from the authorities, etc, I doubt you would have one anyways.

That is all very true, very sobering, and very real.

My only antidote is more beer and bourbon.

That is awfully simple and not much of a life. For a typical person, it is very much a non-call to just keep on keeping on.

Nope. It is one of the few movies the sort of rings true from this far away. It might have become a bit more fiction over the past three years though . . . o_O
