My mom would use paddle ball paddles and as we got older she taped two together. It also didn't hurt as much as we led her to believe it did. LOL

And again, if we got the paddle, we did something to deserve it. Like the time my brother shot a BB dead center in the tv (tube).

My grandfather was no joke though.

Now I had a friend growing up that lived up the block and they were from Pa. I believe the Appalachian part. They had three boys. The oldest was my age. The dad was super strict, but a great father. Didn't drink, smoke or curse, provided for them, had fun with the mom, never abused her or any of the stuff you read or hear about today. Avid outdoorspeople, fishing hunting, etc. They just moved to Baltimore back in the day so he could make more money working at the steel mill.

Many times I would go up to see my friend and walk in and the two younger boys would be standing in the corner, about 18" away, bent at the waist with their head down and against the wall. That was time out. Extra chores were for lesser offenses. If they were really bad, or as he would say "stupid", he would make them walk up to the end of the ally and cut a switch from the base of this tree growing in this yard up there. And he'd "tan their hides".

So relatively speaking, I felt lucky most of the time.

Of course when I was growing up it was given that if one of the neighbors caught you doing something you weren't supposed to be doing they would whip your ass, then they would take you home and your parents would thank them, and then they would whip your ass again.

I don't think it is an effective form of punishment. I'd like to think that it also doesn't have any influence on children other to teach them the difference from right and wrong. I believe kids will grow up to be whatever kind of adult they will be no matter what. I have seen both sides of the coin, each way. My friend fell into a life a crime and eventually severe drug addiction. So did the middle child. The youngest was fine. I myself was not an angel growing up, received my fair share of punishment, and here am now, kind, gentle, successful and happy. Hell, I don't even smoke.

So I definitely never intervene when I see a child being punished (unless it might be considered abuse, to me, or is expressed by someone i determine might be a better judge of it than me) or when I see a child requiring it.

It's a slippery slope for sure.

I reached out to Jay for a portrait of the boys for Cindy. We think he did an excellent job. Going to get @lilred95 to build a custom frame.
