Hey guys, next set of wheels I put on will be 9.5" wide. Can I do a 285 tire or do I have to go wider? 295? 305?

And I'll be going for 33's to start and whenever I get the money to regear I'll go 35's.

35s are a ton of work to fit on our trucks, so I'd do some in depth research here before taking the plunge.

All that aside though, on a 17x9.5" wheel the skinniest I would go is a 285. Most 285s I've seen are actually only supposed to be on a 7.5-9 inch wheel, unless it's a 285/75R17, which is a 34" tall tire. Those for some reason say up to 9.5 inches.

For your specific situation I would do a 295/70R17 if you don't want to go taller than 33", and a 285/75R17 if you want a tad bit skinnier but taller.

You could still do a standard 285/70R17 but some shops won't want to since it's outside of the manufacturer's recommendation to put it on a 9.5 inch wheel. There will be a better selection of tires in that size though. It shouldn't give you any problems except the possibility of abnormal tire wear.

    Good luck!

I appreciate the input, I'll probably shoot for a 295 then.

Offset is -18 and back spacing is 4.5, I'll probably need to get a spacer but I'll put in the work to make everything fit with good clearance. I'll probably take a bfh to the pinch weld, already got the cab mounts chopped back pretty good. Gonna get some jba uca's to push the wheel away from the cab mount and do heavy trimming on the bumper if need be. I won't be doing much offroading for a while since I'm going to basic soon so I won't need to make it full stuff capable. If I need to I may even trim the fenders but that'll have to be a wait and see. Once I get back I'll get some kings and put this hog in the bush!

You won't want a spacer unless it rubs your UCAs, the easiest offset to make tires fit is a 0 offset for our trucks. You will be using a -18 offset, which means that the tires will be sticking out 18mm farther than what is ideal. Mine are a -12 offset and I ended up having to trim a decent bit of plastic for just 32 inch tires (285/70R16). That's because it makes the outside edge of the tire swing farther to either side of the wheel well when turning. I would think you should clear everything pretty well with those wheels, and the negative offset may help with the width of the 35s at some point.

You need a spacer. With the 4.5 backspace you should be fine. Good luck.

0 Offset on a 9.5" wheel wont work. OP has the correct offset for that width wheel. The 4.5" backspace is what you want. 0 offset on a 9.5" wheel is 5.25" backspace which will rub the uca.

Yep you're right, my bad. I have 16x8 wheels and was thinking 0 offset.

Well, no spacer it is then, saves a little money for more truck parts!

Are you sure you really want to run a 9.5" wide wheel? I have 305's on 8.5" wheels and going any wider would definitely make them rub a lot worse. I would recommend the 8.5 or 9" width at the most.

OP did say he's planning on dirty fives at some point, maybe he just plans on a bunch of :sawzall:?

Edit: Your truck looks great. Good choice of wheel! SCS FTW!
