Hey! I have a quick question about how reliable high mileage tacomas are for distance traveling.

I'd want to travel from central California to Valencia in the LA area, and my 97 tacoma has almost 290k miles on it. I take care of this truck very good, change the oil regularly and my truck has had no huge issues at all. A couple of my fam was saying it might not be able to handle the i5 in the mountain area.

Tldr: would a 290k 97 Tacoma make it 2 to 3 hours on a continuous highway?

Any experiences? Advice? Its appreciated, Thanks!

    Yes.

I drove my 99 with 320+k miles on it from Tucson to Lone Pine, CA and back. 10 hours one way, all done in a single day. Just drive it.

It should be fine. Mine has 221k and I would drive it across the country without giving it a second thought.

If you've kept up with the maintenance and been proactive with issues as they've come up then just drive it.

LMAO!!!! I have 305,000 miles on my Tacoma. It's my daily driver, I drive it to the mountains (and all over mountain fire roads and trails) nearly every weekend, and I'll be doing Death Valley this winter.

If you are paranoid, get AAA. They have a package that offers 200 miles (1 way) of towing included. The package here in NC is $119 a year.

i thought you meant Louisiana :notsure:

    using my google university diploma:
LA is Louisiana and it's always will be LA so if you want to say Los Angeles punctuate it L.A. the same thing goes for la, la is not Los Angeles at all neither is this (La).

travel from central California to Valencia in the LA area - It's very obvious that he was speaking of CA when you read that and not Louisiana. LA doesn't mean Louisiana to me when you are referencing CA in the rest of the sentence.

The answer is yes. Mileage is only an indication of how far the vehicle has been driven, not how it was maintained. So, If the truck is well maintained, it will handle long drives no problem, no matter the mileage.

Oh and just for your information, there's a guy on here that had 988,000 miles on his truck and it was his work/daily driver vehicle. It was a 2.4l just like yours

Well... I would drive my Tacoma, with 305,000 miles on it, from California to Louisiana. If I wanted to go to Louisiana, but I don't want to go there. There's probably a reason the State is shaped like a toilet.

only discrepancy with mountains and a long drive versus your daily commute is more music to listen to, and slapping into lower gears uphill. Be safe and have fun traveling

Thanks for all the input! Lots of responses in such a quick timespan while I was working :yay: Im pretty confident about the distance, I guess some input helped me reassure just in case. I just figured an old 4cyl going through the hill area on the grapevine would raise one lash on my brow.

And yeah to that one dude, I ment LA in cali xD just for reference.

I say it's a shitty question. Can it make it? Yes. Can it break down on the way? Yes. Will it def. make it? No.

@Tacrazy651 I've driven my 248k mile Tacoma 4hrs continuously each way several times to/from Los Padres NF, Palo Alto, and everywhere in between.

Just this Wednesday though, my transmission pan developed a leak and my shock blew. I'm sure the shock gave out due to a bad seal, but the transmission pan was one I wasn't prepared for.

I'm chiming in here because my drive was from Central CA to LA county and back.

(101 to the 46, to the 33, to the 5, and to the 210)

Something about the hills caused my pan to seep, but it never did leak at all. Fluid levels were still good to go so that was reassuring as I didn't to mix Toyota fluid with some Autozone stuff I bought along the way.

It should you might have a problem if the right pedal is on the floor the whole time.

Your normal is a few miles 45 50 mph now going to jump on the interstate for 2 to or 3 hours

When you said distance I thought you meant thousands of miles

I drive 200 to 300 miles a few days a week with a 800 pound payload or more around 240,000 or so
