i was crawling around under the truck tonight and seen this hose just hanging down from the top of the transfer case. im not sure what it does or how it got disconnected but i reconnected anyway. who knows how long its been disconnected for.

its kind of a shitty pic but it was pretty hard to get a camera up in there at all. the hose is about 6'' long and from what i seen just comes out of the tcase then goes back in.

Seriously, our gear boxes all have breathers (vents) to let hot gasses out... If they are low on our truck a tube ports the air vent up high so water won't get in... Only our rear differential doesn't have an extended breather... So, we do that ourselves... See link in my signature, as well as 3-4 threads running now on TW discussing the breather mod.

    Have a great day!

Your probably going to find a breather/vent on any engine/trans/transfer/diff for all those moving, spinning, reciprocating parts that are encased & have a large airgap around them causing the inside to build pressure to a point of blowing seals/causing separation of internal lubricants from the parts they would freely lube had there not been high internal case pressure thats why the breathers are needed pretty sure....

^ yah i realize that but is that in fact what the hose is for because it sure doesnt look like one is all, there is no where for it to breath being that it just goes from one fitting like the one in the pic to another identical one.

that pic is taken from the right side of the tcase just for reference

shitroc... have you looked at all the other breather mod photos here on TW? Your photo looks like a union (a barb tube fitting screwed into the t-case or differential or...)... the tube goes from the 'union' to a breather... That looks like a silver cap... it is small.

i know what a breather looks like and this does not look like one, even if it is one it does not resemble the ones like on the diffs. how could the tcase do any kind of venting through this hose when it just joins the two fittings, there is no cap of any kind.

The hose connecting the 2 case parts on the transfer might just be sending the pressure developed by one case into the other & from there maybe venting to the outside I dunno, I'm gonna look at mine now ,ya got my curiousity going.....:notsure:

That breather hose connects the transfer case to the air space in the housing between the transfer case and tranny. If you look on the top left side you will see the little check valve breather.

It may have been disconnected because the breather valve doesn't work and was causing the transfer case seals to leak. Mine did this.

Just made the seals and the shifter boot seep oil when pressure built up. Disconnect the tube again and blow into it to see if the valve releases the pressure.

If you look you'll notice that it comes from 2 different parts of the T case and then via a union it comes together in one hose and heads up towards the back of the engine where it rests.
