PTP is a good company, I was on a budget and couldn't afford their blankets at the time.

Top mount, bottom mount, or roof top mount turbos. Don't care. Just want to boost this damn Taco. Whatever Matt finds to be the most reasonable aftermarket TT option; I'm in.

Curious to see Matt's SC kits dyno numbers though. Heart is set on TT kit but if the SC kit shows good numbers and is available sooner...

@OVTune. I'm not asking for much - just a CARB approved SC with catted dump tubes and the proper tune for my 04B04 4.88 BBP. Thanks! In the mean time I will just enjoy the awesome tune you have blessed us with.

The whole “CARB” compliant thing is, in fact, asking for a lot

Ask and maybe receive. Agreed and understand. Maybe after SEMA Mat will have another avenue/purchaser of his Tune product(s) to match up with the Gen3 SC coming which is in the CARB compliant process.

I don’t know much about turbo vs supercharger. The more I read, I find that a supercharger will provide more power down low, although they are less efficient. A supercharger sounds like what this engine needs, why are so many looking towards higher rpm gains?

I tow a lot and need off the line power straight from idle. Don’t care about zipping around at 5k+ Rpm, a supercharger is what I want right?

my bad. I forget sometimes this is a truck and center of gravity is not an issue, nor is weight. But heat is an issue when pushing 550-600whp.

Not necessarily. A turbo can provide as much if not more torque down low, while being significantly more efficient. Technology has changed a lot over the years when it comes to turbos. Then you have the superchargers. There are roots and screw type, and of those, a screw type is going to be ideal (but not an option for our engine at this point) then there is centrifugal (like what mat is using.) the centrifugal has advantages in terms of installation, although doesn’t bring on low end torque as quickly as a roots or even more so, a screw type blower. It will also be outperformed by a properly designed turbo setup in terms of low end torque and power across the entire spectrum, at the sacrifice of simplicity.

The s/c does win hands down in terms of easy installation and mechanical simplicity.

So in a nutshell there are pros and cons to both, and a lot more than meets the eye to the layman.

tough decision i guess. I searched google just now, supercharger versus turbo, and all say the supercharger is for down low, maybe those sites are out of date I’m not sure, they certainly differ from what I read in this thread.

I wonder if some are just partial to turbos and create reasons why they’re just as good down low.

At first I thought I’d wait for dyno results, but OV himself said to ignore dyno results below 3500rpm on his graphs, so I’m not sure really how to tell which is best. I doubt driving both is in the cards.

Can't generalize, BUTTTTT a relatively small turbo each on on both banks of three on a quick revving, higher compression engine with a decent piston stroke (both adding to low end) is going to spool up quickly and make relatively gobs of torque at a low RPM and actually also be a relatively flat torque curve.

Too many variables for a blanket statement. Turbo technology has come a LONG way.

The setup Matt is trying to do is equal to the EcoBoost v6, quick power and swift response. A Centrifugal blower is not quick on power since their based off a turbocharger inlet. A positive displacement blower is like the whipple, while we wont see one on a Tacoma, it would make a taco insanely bad ass.

^^well summarized and 100% agree. Turbos are the way to go for this engine but the SC kit will be a close second place, especially if you are self installing and want a simpler system. Not mention that the SC kit may be available sooner which will be very tempting. Will be nice to have options.

A turbo can vary it's speed based on boost pressure. A superchargers speed is coupled to the engine speed. Without a bypass on the supercharger it only makes max boost at max engine RPM. The supercharger will have the advantage of near instant power for any given speed (it feels almost like a larger displacement engine). Smaller modern turbos are very fast at spooling now so this ins't a big disadvantage anymore. A turbo will generally make more boost at any RPM than a supercharger. Really small turbos may fall on there face at upper RPMs but that just means you drive it different and shift to adapt. I'll take a turbo any day.

but he said he was not going to get CARB approved. CARB approval means a lot if you need to meet emission requirements. I'd go hands down with Mat for the SC but no CARB = no deal.
