Came across this interesting noise. I have no clue what it could be, but definitely caught it. It doesn’t happen every time but just noticed it, doing under the hood maintenance.

Has anyone else experienced this noise? I don’t believe its the high pressure fuel pump chirp, TSB-0016-18.

The Tacoma has 54k miles, 3.5L.

Use your words. High pitched? Low? Banging? Rattling? Screeching? Engine running? Off? Short time duration? Long? Engine hot? Cold?

Probably just the engine going through the cleaning cycle it's designed to do.

its in the shop. funny thing is, ive never paid a fee for having them look at it... out of 36k/ warranty? they wanted $59. they call me back and said we couldnt find the issue of the high pressure fuel pump, we need an additional $145. if its a warranty issue Toyota will waive it, but if its outside of that youll pay for the diagnostic fees plus fees. feel like im getting fleeced.

so a total of 59+145 for diagnostic? damned if you do damned if you dont. i would just get them to figure it out.

haha basically. such BS, but that noise doesnt sound good though. sound internal to me, and its a bit concerning that it isnt flashing a code on the dash.

could be the pump internals rattling but its still putting out the correct psi so no codes triggered.

Here’s the voicemail that i received for the additional diagnostic work. I seriously hope this is an issue that will be covered under warranty. this is the 4th time ive had my truck in the dealer for TSBs.

after talking with a friend i think it could possibly a oil pump going out, and the bearings could be the first sign of it. Hard to say though.
