Hooke Rd roof rack:

So a busy weekend but got a couple of decent projects done on the truck. It's been a while since I did anything much to the truck it's been a rough year for us and kind of did what I could when the opportunity arose.
I debated for quite a while about a rack. At first I was thinking a over the Best top bed rack but I just don't think it's necessary. I did want a place to mount frcovery boards when needed and fishing rod holders and maybe some other gear. I couldn't justify the exspense of one of the big fancy racks with what my needs are.
The Hooke Rd roof rack thread caught my attention so I started looking at them online and seeing if they were a decent quality. Then work gave me a Amazon gift card and my mind was made up so I ordered it. They were out of stock so it took about a month to get to me but I wasn't in any real hurry.
I guess I got the most updated version with the shark fin cut out, no numbers cut out on the side rails, black hardware, and the powder coating is done pretty well so no complaints. All the hardware was complete with it and it came with 4 pod lights IDK where or if they will be used yet.
Installation was pretty straight forward until I decided to mke cutting the trim pieces on the truck more of an issue. I just took my time and notched them to fit around the mounting brackets. All in all I am very pleased with the product and it should suit my needs well.




I did follow the suggestions of a couple of other people and ordered some bulb seal to go under the edge of the fairing to protect the roof. No vibrations and almost no noticeable air noise, a little but not much.

Dorkel up Time!

Second project for this past weekend. I will admit I am not completely in love with the looks of a snorkel. When we were at AOAA for the TW event last year we went through a buch of water even coming up over the hood a couple of times. There are other places I go where I have to cross water like when i go hunting. I had been debating a snorkel for quite a while and a week after our trip to AOAA a friend @ovrlndkull went to AOAA himself with tragic results. 10 minutes into wheeling he got into some water and hydrolocked his engine. A risk I decided I didn't want to take. After some discussion with another member @TacoFMS about snorkels and the differences in brands I thought I had settled on an Airflow snorkel. The issue became apparently Airflow had stopped producing them for second gen Tacomas. So the current offerings were the Dobinson and ARB neither of which I was a fan of so I kept looking. Last week I found a source for an Airflow so pulled the trigger ordered on Wednesday and it was on my porch on Friday with free shipping.

I'm not going to bore anybody with the process of installing a snorkel but what should of been a 3-4 hour job ended up taking about 13 hours and a slightly sprained wrist.What a debacle all this turned out to be my wife even stepped in a couple of times trying to help me, she is so cool. I always seem to do everything by myself so her help was welcome especially since I spent most of the day with my fat ass stuffed in the wheel well of the truck.

The kit came complete no complaints there. The quality is great no complaints there. So aid out all my parts, inventoried them, and got started.


THE INSTRUCTIONS, HOWEVER, SUCKED GIANT ELEPHANT BALLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I went through the normal process laying out and marking everything to cut and drill. When I started cutting the 4 1/8" hole my drill wasn't up to the task. I borrowed my neighbors corded 1/2" drill and it worked right until the hole saw grabbed in the panel and it ripped my hand and wrist around, stupid wrist still hurts like crap. I used the template and their markings were close but not right on so I marked each hole individually and drilled. Everything lined up great so good to go. Then the issues began.

I read through the instructions before I started and was following them step by step as I went along. As I went to assemble the ducting I checked part numbers and both elbows were the same number (remember this part). As I tried to asseble everything and run the ducting in the fender nothing wanted to work. I couldn't get anything to line up as it was supposed to. I finally got the snorkel mated to the tubing but when i went to match it to the intke it wasn't long enugh. I went into town and nobody had a rubber coupling that would work so I came home. THEN I LOOKED ONTHE COMPUTER. There was an alternative updated version of the instructions listed. As I read through this I noticed the elbows were not the same. the ends that coupled with the snorkel and the intake tube were different lengths. SO, I went back out and disassembled everything and started all over again. It all went together slick as a whistle this tme butit was also like 10:30 so I went on to bed and finished up this evening. I was pissed but it was a simple mistake that remedied everything. I had matched part numbers but never saw the difference in the elbows. Live and learn I guess.

 

It's really not bad. When the back tires drop off the apron it drops down and clears fine.
