    Not saying it is... but I had a similar sounding clunk but in my 1st gen. 03 for a long time. Went away when I finally changed out the leaking steering rack. I don't know if noise would happen before leakage? Maybe a bad inner tie rod end up in the steering rack which you cannot see unless you go through all the trouble of pulling the boot off that thing.
