put into 4wd and the truck stopped pulling into a parking lot. Tried to take out of 4wd and the light stays blinking. Can’t accelerate the truck. Less than 30 days off the dealer lot.

Are you doing this on dry pavement?

Did you keep moving a little bit?
I have to wiggle the steering wheel and creep forward for mine to drop out at a complete stop.

^^ Bad idea unless only going straight... Binds up everything.

Put selector back in 2WD so that the light flashes, and move steering wheel back and forth a little while moving at like 1mph. Should drop back out of 4WD.

    Yeah.
If you were doing a tight turn on dry pavement in 4WD, it will bind. That is normal behavior. Driving on dry pavement in 4WD is not. As mentioned, leave it in 2WD and maybe try backing up and moving forward while slightly moving the steering wheel back and forth to get the gears to let go.

Don’t feel bad. You’re not the first nor the only one. I’ve learned this lesson on my own also and found that others had same issue when I logged onto internet to search for why my new truck could be coming to a stop for what I thought was no reason. It’s ok on slow turns but 90 degree turns.... doesn’t end well. Just be thankful you didn’t learn this trying to do a u-turn on the highway :)

And by the way, I learned my lesson pulling into a parking lot thankfully also!

    OP,

    The truth:

With a Toyota truck that is “malfunctioning”, your first questions should always be “what am I do wrong”. 99.9% of the time, you will be fucking up, and will need to consult the manual, or educate yourself, here or elsewhere. They chances of it being a defective truck are slim. I suggest you seek out some “how a 4WD system works” type videos on YouTube (there are many good ones) and start from the beginning.

    This is a great resource:

Dry pavement 4wd doable only going straight... NOTHING will brake if op do this to keep everything lined...

I do this around 1 or 2 days a week on a 4 mile long dead straight stretch of road on my way to work..

I had a similar experience. Pulling out of a parking lot, watching traffic, I reached down to turn the ac fan up a bit and accidentally got my hand on the 4WD knob. Traffic cleared and I started a turn out of the lot and damn, it started bucking like a pissed off bull. Two seconds of that and I figured out what I did and quickly fixed it. Much more careful now.

Curious that Tacoma doesn't have a center diff? How does it engage 4wd? Guess I need to do some learning!!

It has a transfer case, which essentially locks together the front and rear driveshafts. Going around a corner they need to be independent or else it binds.

AWD adds a center differential, but there are downsides that are not good to have for real offroad use.

You have a transfer case. The center diff in some vehicles gives them an “all wheel drive feature”, which allows the front and back wheels to run at different speeds in addition to differences left-to-right,
