I heard that Toyota is sending letters for 2017 Tacomas in cold weather States for frame rust. They are planning on spraying frames as a preemptive measure. I know this was a problem in the past but I had assumed that Toyota took care of this with newer models.

Is there any difference between 2017 and 2018 frames? Is it just a matter of time before I get a letter for my 2018?

Judging by the past, I’d say yes. It’s all incremental.

I think you're both right but I don't understand the cause. How are Tacomas different than other vehicles?

I’m sure the bean counters at Toyota did the math and it came out cheaper to use lower quality frames and replace some of them eventually.

I’m baffled. Three billion dollars and Toyota still hasn’t learned...

“Owners of frame-rotted Tacomas, Tundras and Sequoias, take notice.

Toyota settled a class action suit this week which will cost the company over three billion dollars. The suit was brought by customers who have had the frames of their Tacoma and Tundra trucks and Sequoia SUVs fail due to corrosion. Most customers refer to this as frame rot.”

It takes roughly two days of labor for technicians to perform a frame swap.

If you're planning on keeping this truck for a long time or care about your resale value be proactive and rust proof it yourself with 3M Cavity wax. Fluid Film or Crown.

When it comes to rust prevention of frames Toyota is cheap and ignorant.

Bottom line: the frame coating is inferior on these trucks. I coated mine with 4 cans of Fluid Film and 3 cans of WoolWax.

I don't want Toyota's nasty slurry of gunk sprayed on my frame to cover up rust. Their garbage is 1960's tech and has no place in 2019.

"We'll cover rust out for 12 years but cause it to rust out in 13, you just won't be able to see it.'' Toyota's statement............

Dip the damn frames in zinc. There, fixed it for you ya dumb engineers and bean counters.

Because domestic vehicles have probably already shit the bed before the rust had crippled them, and because Toyota actively involves themselves in the rust management with campaigns, and Their campaigns gather attention. So far I have not seen any 3rd gens with buckled frames due to rust. And this isn’t just a Toyota thing. Steel does in fact rust.

Toyota actively involves themselves in rust management because they got sued and settled knowing they were going to lose in court.

Mmm. I don’t see it that way. Plus My 01 and 17 are nearly rust free. And I live in a salty as fuck state. Toyota has been footing the bill for neglectful owners. And again, let’s not compare these to domestics which do also rust, but don’t have the long expected life cycle of a Toyota.

I know what you're saying but just google it. This is the result from searching "vehicle rust lawsuit". And before you say that I'm getting Toyota results because of my search history, This was done in an incognito tab.

Do a search on other trucks regarding frame rust and you'll find that domestic trucks have a huge problem too. I think Toyota frame issues is well known because they did a recall, which brings media attention, and the fact that so many people dislike Toyota because their overall build quality and reliability make the Big 3 look so bad. I also agree with what others have said regarding the Tacoma is still on the road, going strong mechanically, while their competition is filling wrecking yards.

Makes you wonder how the body on the older Toyota trucks would rust off before the frame.
