285s and Bilstein 5100

Goal: 285s

Step 1) Bilstein 5100s

Step 2) ???????????, obviously i would need 2.5" lift to clear 285s (with trimming) but what route should i take... what gives the least harsh ride?

• set front Billys at 2.5"
• set front Billys at 0"... with Daystar 2.5" Leveling Kit and Rear Block (about $150)

some have said Billys at 2.5", although stiff due to compressed spring, still rides better than 2.5" spacer. True? while others will counter that the spring is actually more compressed than a spacer would, thus the spacer rides better...True? SO WHAT'S THE DEAL? obviously everyone will backup their setup, but for those looking into the lift... whats the best route?

i was originally gonna go with Billys at 0" and buy Daystar Comfort Ride (2.5" Leveling Kit with Rear Block)... any thoughts?

i'd appreciate any feedback

 

I'm just gonna do billys set at 2.5 for now...I don't care about ride quality though

so you originally had a 3" Front Spacer with 1.5" Pro Comp AAL, then swapped out the spacer for Billys at 2.5"?

did u notice any difference?

 

I just ordered the billys and haven't got em yet. But I agree with the guy up top. Spacers are not the way to go...I just got em cause it was cheap but trust me man...just save a little loot and do a real suspension lift. I wish I would've done that to begin with


:edit: The spacers caused my stock shocks to top out because they had no more room for up travel when I hit a big hill going kinda fast and the seals blew

 

^agreed!!! not enough suspension travel...lil wash boards caused front end to hop like crazy

now, if i do NOT plan on doing much off roading (minimal if that), do you suppose spacers are the way to go with billys at 0"? or just throw billys up at 2.5" solos?

i guess at this point i want 285s and dont want a harsh-ride. (but i understand that any lift will decrease ride quality... i thought i counter that with Billys, but not the case)

(the guys at 4wheelparts and other shops wna sell me on daystar spacer kit in addition to my billys at stock... i'm sure they're just tryin to make a few bucks off me)

 

go with billies set at 2.5 dont even think about spacers

 

Agreed on not going with any spacers and go with the billys set on 2.5 or buy an eibach coils with billys set on 0.85. This will give a better ride and will give just about 2.5 inches of lift. Also go with an AAL in the rear instead of a block.

where can i get the eibachs???

 

toyteclifts.com has them. I have this coils set up at "0" and gave about 1.6 inches of lift. Love them!

 

can i buy them separate from the ultimate lift???

 

nm i foumd them...not bad...eibachs with billies set at 1.75 sound good???

 

They are sold separately and it is not part of the ultimate lift.

 

okay... we're gettin somewhere now... so,

1) Billys set at 0.85"

2) Eibach Coil Springs (~1.6" lift)

• found them for about $150 on Toytec.com and eastsidecustomtruck; sounds like a much better investment then spacer kit
• would i need anything else other than the springs? seems pretty straight fwd, just swapping out the springs.
• also, this obviously will screw my ext warranty, right? but i'm thinking shops wouldnt even notice the difference in the springs...?

3) Block ($40) vs. AAL ($80)

• i dont plan on towing or any heavy cargo... so wouldnt i be okay with block?
• 1" or 1.5" block"

FYI... i came across this piece of info earlier today...

".85 is pretty much maxing out the pre-load. so if you try 1.75 you might extend the shocks too much"

im under the impression you can only go 0.85" on billys with Eibach Coils

 

Nope, thats all you need. I would still go with the AAL because of the ride quality. It is only $40 differenece and it takes the same amount of installation compare to the blocks. Also you would need a new U-bolts if you go with the block and you will end up spending about the same as if you buy the AAL. Search on the Topics tab and click on suspension, you will find many info about these products and how to install them.

They may give you a hard time if you have any problems in your suspensions but the rest you should be okay. You are putting a better parts than the stock so you should be okay with any problems in the future. Just stay with 2.5 lift so that you don't run in to any problems later. Remember the higher you go, the more stress in your CV boots and might need an aftermarket UCA to correct any alignment issues.
